The role of a school Library Media Specialist is ever evolving, and so, often misunderstood by both the LMS and their colleagues.

To date, I have not been given any specific goals for my new position, and so have constructed my own vision from my perspective of a classroom teacher, and from what I have gleaned from research and collaboration with LMS colleagues. While I possess some of the qualities that are in line with my goals as I understand the role of the LMS, there are some I will have to grow into!

A library media specialist must:
-inspire and support capable and avid readers
-Be an avid reader and seeker of growth opportunities to share with school community
-identify and secure the best resources for students and teachers in and active multi-media environment
-promote digital citizenship and information literacy
-enrich learning and creativity through technology
-be an instructional partner (and leader) to classroom teachers by seeking regular opportunities to collaborate

In my district, the LMS has been a much maligned role. Words overheard in the teachers' lunch room:

"What is she doing with all that free time?" "Does she ever leave the library?" "Wish I could just sit around and read stories all day." "My students aren't even coming back from Library with good book choices."

These comments gave me pause when applying for the LMS position! Did I want to possibly subject myself to this criticism? How could I change the perception of this important role?

I believe most Librarians have an innate desire to want to help. As a classroom teacher, I reached our for support from our LMS whenever I needed it. Whenever I did, she was always a ready and willing partner. I knew that if I took on this role, one of my first jobs would be to reach out to teachers and ask "how can I help?" by walking into their rooms to see what was going on, or sitting with them at a lunch meeting inquiring about what content and standards I could support.
