Overall, i believe that my Practicum was a success. The students liked me as a teacher and person and was able to create lessons that were fun for the students but also made the students learn the information. I took notes for the first 2 weeks and then was able to teach 2-3 lessons a day. Actually teaching the lessons made the days go by faster and i would much rather teach then take notes. My associate teacher was very nice and was able to give me feedback on how to get better at lesson planning as well as presenting the lessons to its full potential

As expected, My first week teaching went worse then my week 2 teaching. First week teaching i was trying to tell them exactly what i wanted from them with each lesson, worksheet etc, The Students would either talk when i was talking and i had to tell them to stop and even my associate teacher had to get up and say they were being disrespectful and were being extremely rude or they would not understand what was expected of them because my instructions and expectations where not very clear to them. My second week is where the growth started to happen. At the beginning of my second week, i felt way more prepared than first week. I was able to start to use my associate saying to get them to stop what they were doing and look to the front. The saying was "Class,Class" and they would repeat "Yes,Yes". once i was able to use that saying, the lessons and explanations would go by so much smother because they would listen as well as myself as a teacher having some control over the students which i did not have week one. My explanations of the lessons became much smoother after talking to my associate teacher after week one which lead to them understanding the information more and getting through the lessons and work more efficiently. When i go back in February, the students will know that i will use that saying and be able to explain what is required of them for each lesson which will be a great step in the right direction to more teacher growth for me.

One of my key practicum experiences that i had was my first week and day of teaching in front of the class which would have been week 3 in the practicum. The lesson i had to teach was a social science "Fundamentals of Canadian Identity". This lesson was more teacher centred than student centred because i had to explain what was on the overhead projector and the students were to follow along and ask questions along the way if they did not understand what was on the projector. The lesson had 7 values of a Canadian citizen with about 3 points at the bottom of each to show why each value is important for Canadian identity i thought that we would take about 20 minutes to talk about the values and 20 mins at the end of the period to write down the information with the points because this was something they would be tested on in middle of November with their actually teacher. Instead, it took me the whole 40 minutes to talk about these values because they were off-task and asked more questions then I thought they would so we had to continue into the next social science period which changed my lesson plan for that specific period.

In my last week of teaching, We did a science lesson on habitats where we would go through the 8 slides on powerpoint about "What is a habitat" "Different types of habitats" etc. I thought there would be more questions asked during the powerpoint slides but there was not. When we finished the powerpoint we had about 15 minutes of class left so for 5 minutes i asked for questions about the powerpoint and i got maybe 3-4 students asking questions. before the powerpoint i had mentioned that i would ask 1 question about the powerpoint and they would have to write there answer on a paper. I wrote the question on the board and gave them about 5-10 minutes to answer the question that a wrote on the blackboard. since this was my first time giving out exit cards to a class i did not know what to expect. I knew that exit cards are a good idea because it gets the students to remember what they learned and be able to show me what they learned. One by one they would go to the back table and give me there answers on the paper and it was an overall success.

In week 2 of my teaching on Thursday, I implemented my own saying because i did not want to keep using her saying. when period 3 began the students came in and i was already in front of the classroom. they put the soccer-balls and other items they had for recess in the back room of the class and sat down and talked. I just stood there and waited to see how they would respond. After about 30 seconds one of the students said "Guys, i think Mr.O is trying to start the lesson" most of the kids stopped talking but some of the students kept talking. That is when i finally said "Ill just wait for you to finish" That is when those students stopped talking and i got everybody's attention. the next day on Friday the last day of practicum, i used that line before all 3 of my lessons for that day and it worked. they would stop talking when i said that line but some of the students will start to listen when i just stand there silently. When i go back in February, i want to keep using this saying and stand up front silently because it worked and i liked how it worked.

What went well during my practicum

The first thing that went well during practicum is that the students really liked me being there and i was able to talk to the students and they were able to ask me questions that they would not normally ask there teacher. an example would be students asking me how old i was and what my favourite thing to do outside of school. The second thing that went well was some of my lessons that i thought would be bad but ended up being good. An example would be me teaching a drama class and i needed space because it was an activity where they would act out different motions of a superhero and they would need to move around and there were 22 of them. My associate teacher let us go into the auditorium and with that my lesson went better then expected because there was tons of space for the students to act out what i wanted them too ex. they would have to move as they were getting chased by a villain.

What did I learn from this experience?

The main thing that I learned from practicum would be that the students learn a lot slower than I thought. When it came to copying stuff down from projector or blackboard, it would take them forever to do. I also learned that i need to plan out my lessons better for the time that i am given. On the first week some of my lessons ended 5-6 minutes early and i had no plans for those 5-6 minutes which created stress for me being up at the front of the room with no plan. The last thing i learned is that I have to create my lesson plans knowing that the students learn slower than I thought. especially when it is a lesson where it requires the students to write information down

The teaching strategy that I used in my class was the Hybrid/Blended style and it worked well for my class. The Hybrid style of learning combines student and teacher interests as well as the students needs. With this style of teaching, i found that the students were more engaged with the actives i set out for the students. for example, the students liked to walk around in the class so i had some lessons that involved moving around to different groups.

I remember being at home creating these lesson plans for specific subjects and being completely overwhelmed. The second week went much more smooth with the lesson plans because I had an idea how the kids react to different lessons plans and I figured out how to create lesson plans that would involve everybody and had some fun activities to really get the students engaged
