Buying personal items using a company credit card is unethical according to deontology. The company has a right to the items purchased using their funds, and it is the duty of the employee to safeguard the company's assets and comply with company policy. They are stealing funds from the company, which has a legal right of ownership over those funds. It is clearly seen here that the rights and duties are correlative in this example. The company's right over the credit card establishes the employees duty of only using the credit card for company purchases.

Debbie Eckholt

Work less to compensate for cuts in benefits and pay?

We all begin our jobs with good intentions, virtue and good
ethical behavior. However, has time goes by usually years on the job, you begin
to realize that your work may not be getting the appreciation it deserves. Your
fellow co-workers spend their day doing minimal work, engages in unethical
behavior, and treats employees under them with disrespect and uncivility.

When management treats you with disrespect and uncivility,
you begin to question your own virtue and moral behavior. Why do what is best
for this company, when the company is not looking out for the employee’s best
interest. Management get large raises and the employees receive a minimal raise
(1-2%). Staff has been cut so save money
(management still get a raise) and your work load has double.

Although though two wrongs don’t make it right. It is hard
to work hard and do what’s moral correct when the company you work for treats
its employees with disrespect and uncivility.

Taking home a copy of work software for personal use can lead to some very bad punishment. Some companies might even fire the employee who took home the software. If you look at the utilitarianism view of ethics you can see that some people might not have a problem doing it. In utilitarianism you need to look at the benefits and harms (consequences) and also who benefits and who is harmed. In this example the benefit is using software for free but the risk is getting caught by your boss. The punishment could be very bad, but if the employee thinks the chance of them becoming discovered is very small then they think the risk is not that great. Then you must look at the people who would be harmed or benefited from this action. The person who benefits is the employee because they don't have to pay their own money for the software. People might think the company is not being harmed, but only the software company who made the software will be harmed because they did not receive any money for their product. If it is a big company like Microsoft people will believe that they will not feel the effect of stealing one piece of software, but the employee who gets it for free will absolutely feel the positive affect in their bank account. If you use this method of thinking maybe people will see no ethical problem with the action.

When viewing as a Utilitarian. It would seem that Millennials, using the internet to learn about the company’s competitors would be ethical and the norm. Depending on what department you are in, the Marketing department would do research to see if they already have your product or service, then your company could use the information to pitch a new service or product. You could also research other companies to see how well a service or product you might be interested in using. Now if you hack into their software, which is not ethical and should not be done.

As we know, millennial generations really care about network and social life. They may feel that it is acceptable to do so at work. Uploading personal photos on a company network is unethical. They like to share their information, but it is not ethical to do this at the workplace. In the workplace, everyone should be professional and think of company interests first. Employees have responsibilities to concentrate on the business at work, and not to use company time to do personal things during a job. They can put personal photos around work area, but shouldn’t upload on the company network. A company network is a working tool, and just for accomplishing the business tasks. Employees can find information from it, and share information. They should not share personal photos and information at the workplace. This behavior is not ethical and professional, and could result in being terminated.

B. It is unethical to buy personal items using a company credit card.

According to a deontological theory of ethics, our actions must conform to a certain set of principles and rules regardless of whether the consequences of those actions are morally correct or incorrect. Furthermore, a majority of people in the business community would probably agree with the maxim that it is fraudulent to use a company credit card to purchase personal items. Thus, a deontologist would conclude that it is unethical for someone to use a company credit card to purchase personal items, because that behavior does not conform to rules of ethical conduct in the business community.

Debbie, great posting. I am with you. Working for
over 10 years in the same place, I have seen lots of ethical misconduct.
Employees using social media such as Facebook, you tube, chatting over the
phone for long time, play video games, watch movies and so on. It amazes me how
some people are self-occupied and completely disregard and disrespect authority
figures. I guess bad behavior is motivated by the same thing, no matter where
it is used and prevalent throughout out a person's life, whether in office or
at home. Our ethical view defines who we really are, and it shows what we stand
for. Members shall respect, promote, and contribute to a workplace that is
safe, healthy, and free of harassment in any form. (ACA CODE OF ETHICS)

Buying personal items using a company credit card is unethical in my opinion. I would like to take the perspective of virtue ethics while explaining this. A person who was considering purchasing personal items with a company credit card may be under pressures such as financial need, or poor compensation. However, a set of internal virtues, such as honesty, fairness, respect, and integrity, would show that this behavior as it would be unethical, and would guide one away from taking this route.
