Discrimination can be seen while the man talks to his son while the Indian women is in labor. The man says to his son "No. I haven't any anesthetic.... but her screams are not important. I do not hear them because they are not important" (Hemingway). This white doctor does not care that this Indian women is struggling to give birth, he is only concerned with getting the job done, leaving, and explaining his process to his son. His words such as "not important" are used to emphasize that helping an Indian women is less important than helping white people. He simply does not care about this women and the pain she is in and is only there to get the job done. It is also evident that he is not rushing this process. He continues to talk to his son without acknowledging the struggling women. This portrays discrimination because the doctor would not be talking to his son or not bring anesthetics to a patient if he or she was white. But, he does these things to the Indian women because she isn't white and is seen as insignificant.

Racial discrimination is not the only form of discrimination in "Indian Camp". Gender discrimination can be clearly seen later in the story. After the woman gave birth, the doctor said that the fathers are the "worst suffers in these little affairs". This is discrimination of gender, the man gave no comment to how much the woman actually suffers in physical pain. The father had no role to play in the birth, therefore he is the individual with the least suffering.

An example of Ernest Hemingway's use of diction to show threads of discrimination can be seen throughout the excerpt by the terms the characters use:"Over to the Indian Camp. There is an Indian Lady very sick,"(Hemingway). The characters use use terms such as "Indian" and "Indian Lady" showing that there is a division and a thread of discrimination because terms such as theses are used by the characters throughout the excerpt showing the division between the two groups and how they address one another. Also a character uses a term such as "damn squaw b*tch" (Hemingway) after being bitten. This shows a thread of discrimination through Hemingway's use of Diction because he used words such as "b*tch" and "bitten" if the woman was not of Indian race she would not have been called that and if the man was one of the Woman's own people she most likely would not have bitten him, demonstrating the discrimination that both have for each other.

Discrimination is revealed through the doctor's words, "her screams are not important. I don't hear them because they are not important." In a normal scenario, any doctor would willfully attend to a pregnant woman who is obviously in pain and offer her some sort of remedy to aid her. Despite this, Hemingway portrays the father as describing the screams as "not important." This phrasing leads one to believe that the doctor does not prioritize the woman's needs and has literally no empathy for the woman or urgency in a situation that would normally foster these feelings. Because of this, discrimination is evident since the only difference between the Indian woman and a white woman that would lead to different treatment from the doctor is race, thus signifying unfairness.

A sense of intolerance towards Indians is portrayed through Hemingway's word choice. "Doing a Ceasarian with a jack-knife and sewing it up with nine-foot, tapered gut leaders"(Hemingway). The fact that a professional doctor would use such barbaric tools, including a "jack-knife" and "tapered gut leaders", reveals that he does not value this Indian patient as much as others. One can assume that the father owns more developed instruments than everyday objects. That being said, enduring labor for two days, he should have been aware that she would need a special procedure done to remove the child, and bring the necessary equipment with him. Therefore, the reader can infer that the father does not believe Indians deserve equivalent treatment to other races.

An example discrimination in Indian Camp shown though diction is when the author uses the diction of saying that the woman's screams are not important. When nick asks his father to stop the woman's screams his father responds by saying, "'But her screams are not important.I don't hear them because they are not important"'(Hemingway). The diction of the words "not important" shows discrimination because it portrays that the doctor does not care about his patient's well being. This causes the readers to infer that the doctor is just there to do his job of delivering the baby and leave. Because of this discrimination readers can also infer that the doctor would have treated the woman differently if she was not Indian.

Diction to show Nick's father's lack of concern about his patient. He obviously doesn't feel empathy for his patient, as he says "But her screams are not important. I don't hear them because they are not important". The diction in this quote is when the doctor says that he doesn't hear the screams. By saying he doesn't hear them, the doctor is implying that the woman's screams don't bother him in the slightest. This is obviously discrimination because it shows that the doctor does not even remotely care about the well being of the woman, as pain could cause her to go into shock or other serious side effects. He views the delivery as nothing more than a job, and he doesn't care about anything more than what he is paid to do.

Threads of discrimination are first shown in the journey to the village. The non-natives got into the boat while the natives were working hard in the cold to get them to the village. Hemingway mentions, "Indians shoved it off and one of them got in to row...The Indian who was rowing was working very hard..." The non-natives didn't offer to help nor was it stated that they had thanked the Indians. Another discriminating moment is when Nick's father had the deliver a baby. Nick was curious and was asking questions when his father says he doesn't care about the impregnated mother's pain or cries of help. Ernest stated,"'I don't hear them because they are not important.'" The father was very rude with his response to his child and being a doctor and needing to stop pain, he wasn't in any mind wanting to care. He shoved off the pain of the women and went to do his case as soon as possible.

In the story, there is an instance where the main character, as well as his father are relaxed while the Native American is working hard rowing the boat, "Nick lay back with his father's arm around him. It was cold on the water. The Indian who was rowing them was working very hard" This proves that Nick and his father, instead of helping the Native who was 'working hard' as the story described, chose to let him do all the work while they lay back and admire the water, it was written that the man rowing the boat was "working very hard" Nick obviously realized this and no doubt his father did as well. They could have helped out by taking turns rowing, however they chose to stay silent even with this knowledge. This is an example of discrimination because nobody was helping the Native American who was "working very hard" as the passage described it, ooga booga

For example, while the Indian women screams in pain, the doctor chooses to ignore her cries claiming they are "not important" however, when Uncle George was bit, the doctor was sure to put peroxide on it as soon as he was finished. It is clear that the doctor has a more careless tone towards the Indian lady giving birth than the Uncle that happened to get a bite on his arm. this lady is giving birth, trying to at least, but the doctor showed more care towards the unlucky Uncle just because he is white and she happens to be colored. Discrimination.
