There might be sampling problems when elaborating the reports, or employers might face recruitment difficulties because they are just not doing things the right way, but there is no denying that fertility rates are falling and that the demand in knowledge intensive sectors is increasing. As the demographic crisis maximizes the age dependency ratio, an increasing number of elderly people will depend on the willingness and self-confidence of the younger generation to study and train for more and more difficult jobs.

In my opinion, there is a shortage of STEM skills in Europe. There are several factors for this, some of them and for me the most important: the school is not creating "thinking minds", but rather people who reproduce knowledge. Another factor, not least, is the lack of knowledge, and the professions, there is no real recognition of the value of people as people, but also as beings capable of thinking.

There is a problem with STEM professionals in Ukraine, as well as in Europe. First of all, more and more young people choose to study Humanities, and taking into consideration the level Sciences and Math are tought at schools, it's no wonder. Also, we must take into account that this jobs are usually not very well paid, at least in my country, so this is another reason why young people don't want to pursue STEM careers. I guess we could solve this problem combining the efforts of the governement in raising the prestige of such professions as well as changing the system of education, making it more STEM-oriented. That is what is being done in Ukraine at the moment but it is still first steps and we have a long way ahead of us.

Today, we have new programs, evaluation by the skills but in the daily life we have a division by humanistic and Stem curriculum.

There's a shortage of students who wants to pursue a career in the scientific field mainly because scientific subjects are considered difficult. Many students give up on the first year of university or later because they can not keep the pace. Those who successfully complete the university are often lacking of practical experience. Giving learners the tools to develop passion for science, curiosity for the possible future and hope to really get a job in the field, could be a first step to let them develop strong scientific skills. Moreover it's very important in my opinion that members of industry clearly address their need.
The other day I was for example listening to the radio and an engineer was saying there is a shortage of people in the aerospace industry (both technicians and graduates). It could be useful to work in close collaboration with industry to see in which sectors there's really need of scientific skills, and building pathways with schools to train students according to it.

Unfortunately, education systems in many parts of the world are not designed to win the skills that students want. There is a test truth in my country. students are only trained to pass exams. it is not possible for students to improve their high-level skills. There are no conditions for making scientific applications, developing prototypes and for students to innovate. There are also communication problems between academy, industry and school.

We use technology in every area of our life, that we can not escape anymore. With the industry 4.0 revolution, the world transforms much more different and faster than we are perceiving. This change also effects professions. While Industry need specialized proffessions, they often can not find them. The solution of this problem is training. In my opinion, not only youth but also people of all ages should be trained in STEM training. As a teacher, I think it is necessary to focus on STEM education so that students can be more ready to the new World.

I think that unfortunately there is a shortage of stem skills in our country. The school I believe should aim more specifically to develop the creitic sense and computational thinking in boys. Very often, however, the scientific subjects are presented as something uncomplicated not in the reach of everyone and as concepts on mnemonic concepts without practical feedback. In the workplace there is a great demand for people who know how to apply their logic and scientific reasoning to achieve concrete results. The school is far from offering that preparation to its pupils. I do not have to point to believe in sterile concepts but on their applications.

A shortage of STEM skills definitely exists in my country.I guess it is due to the fact that educational programmes are being prepared without considering the demands of today's job market. There is not enough attention given for STEM subjects at schools, students are forced to memorise a lot of information which they tend to forget. The country has not got a clear vision what students should be taught at school. Every teacher thinks that his/her subject is the most important. This happens due to the pressure teachers feel all the time. The greatest phobia for both teachers and students is the exam. As if we are preparing students not for life and successful carriers but just for this final test.

Lack of specific and qualified skills is because there are not enough young people to fill certain demanding job. The reasons and factors, people avoid entering certain occupations, are different. In many cases people are not attracted to these jobs, education and training often discourage young people and unattractive working conditions such as a stressful working environment, negative real wage growth, job insecurity certainlycontribute to the shortage.

I think teachers lack the experience and motivation to focus more experimental activities; too much theory, and this dismisses students from natural sciences. There is a great need for science museums with interactive activities, better cooperation between secondary schools and high schools, between business and higher education institutions. There should be changes in politics to change the attitude and funding of science. Or maybe the youth don't want to work hard? Maybe it's better for them to choose a speciality where it's easier, less thought and get better salary?

Looking at the 2 sources, and assuming the sampling techniques are valid, then it appears there is a STEM skills shortage but that it varies widely from one country to another and from year to year.
2. In some countries it may be because technology is changing fast and higher ed is a little behind in training people for the required skills. In others, it may be that people are leaving to move to other countries where their skills are still in demand, or they can command higher salaries. In others it may be that the changing demographic makes demands on certain STEM sectors and that this had not been anticipated very well. Links between Higher Ed and industry to anticipate change are vital.
3. The perceived shortage may not be an accurate reflection. The skills may be there but not being matched to job descriptions due to flaws in the recruitment process.

As far as we can tell, yes, there is such a shortage. Why would we be doing this MOOC, if that concern didn’t exist?...
Coming to the causes of the shortage, they might be multiple, but there’s one of them that strikes me the deepest: the way some governments systematically neglect their roles in intermediating between school, university and labor market.
I wouldn’t’ accept governments taking the place of students(/parents) choosing their formation paths; I don’t really think governments could ever mess with each university’s formation offer definition; I don’t even conceive a circumstance in which governments would interfere in employer’s processes of recruiting… But governments are the perfect partner to link all these players, in a functional network of common needs, shared objectives and joint efforts to upgrade societies.
In Portugal, we just knew that, this year, 40 university courses haven't received any student applications… This is obviously ridiculous and a good example of how school, university and labor market are speaking in totally different languages, but maybe this is no single case in Europe.
If governments are aware that STEM careers give youngsters good future prospects, they must engage themselves in introducing and attracting them to it. If governments get involved in introducing and attracting young people to STEM, they must make themselves sure that universities are equally focused in deploying that specific formation. If governments make all the possible efforts to help students’ STEM careers becoming real, they must encourage employers to modernize their own working procedures and routines, in order to exploit in this scientific knowledge in the best possible way.

I think there is a shortage of STEM skills in Europe mainly because STEM courses tend to have very difficult exams that require a lot of work from students and some just take other courses with not so demanding exams. Also, after qualification, there is a shortage of job offers. There's a lot of graduates that can't find a job and have to move to different countries to be able to work in the area they chose to study. One other reason is that the STEM courses aren't evolving as quickly as the technology is and students find often that what they have been learning is already out of date. STEM courses should give them the necessary tools (ICT, for ex.) to be able to learn and improve on their own.

They choose to study subjects that form skils for communication, which can be used by travel and entertainment - something that humanitarian subjects offer. Acquiring STEM skills requires more self-control, longer concentration and spend much time. This is not attractive for young people.
The problem with the gap of STEM skills has started long ago in Europe and in my country. It has led to a lack of good and quality teachers at present, which leads to recycling - there are no specialists to prepare good specialists. The profession of teacher in many countries is not attractive because it is not profitable and socially prestigious. For example, for 5 years there hasn't been any student in my university who would like to study for physics and chemistry teachers . The question is: Who will teach in Physics and Chemistry the young generation?!
The education policy of the state and the employers are also responsible for this problem.

Teaching Stem skills needs well educated creative and innovative teachers. There are many EU countries where is the education generaly underfinanced. Teachers have poor conditions, many of them are also old and they are not enough suported within school system to imrove their education in a developing area. Then they teach in an oldfashion way. The good teachers have no motivation. Stem subjects also need more effort of students, they need to see results and be motivated. It is the task for ministries of education, industry, companies, economy atc. to cooperate and have a good strategy. Teaching STEM should start in kindergarten and go on during the whole school attandance. But we shouldn't forget that not all students are talented in STEM subjects. The society also needs good humanities. They can help to solve maybe even the problem with the lack of STEM skills.

The first point of view is daily observed all over the world, not only in Europe – the employers need employees that possibly doesn’t exist. The problem is much bigger. People have right skills but they also have jobs, which maybe don’t use those skills but after years of unemployment they are afraid to change vacancy, even they can earn more. They think that it mightn’t work so they stay safely where they are. On the other hand, there are areas where people have got great skills and they don’t have jobs because there are too many of them – for example „STEM teachers” – there are too many of them according to the number of students in Europe, so a lot of them (people with great knowledge and abilities) cannot find work. Moreover, no employers want teachers as their employees – it’s incomprehensible. Next, you should analyse that only small number of employees cooperate with schools and take part in preparing future employees.

It is not only for jobseekers but also for employers who have a problem finding the right staff.

The example of IT services is typical. Nowadays, the tendency to engage with PCs is particularly evident. The ten most demanding skills for the current year are PCs. It should be noted that these deficiencies do not occur equally in all EU countries. For example, in the medical field, there is no problem in Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden and England.

There are several reasons for this, such as the lack of professional supply and the growing demand. In addition, some professions (eg STEMs) are not as attractive either in terms of remuneration or in terms of working conditions. The school is cut off from reality. Students simply learn to learn, not to innovate. There is no appropriate training and practice infrastructure in this educational process to train teachers in STEM training.

All around Europe, the school aims to train students on STEM skills. Sometimes, their level fits harder with employers' demands because the labor market has a more rapid dynamics than the education system. However, the school is consistently pursuing STEM (and other) basic skills, with which young people can develop themselves personally and professionally to meet the job imperatives they are targeting. The gap between the economic environment and the education system is due to different developmental rhythms: if an employer needs skilled workers, the school can at most anticipate this need to respond as quickly as possible to the employer's demand.

Yes, skill gaps are common in some European countries (Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Finland). Skill gaps are linked to job complexity; organisations that design their jobs so that skills of different breadth and depth are required by the staff to carry out their duties are characterised by larger skill gaps. The reason is that complex jobs are associated with a higher level of skill demand, which demands greater expertise of employees so that they are fully proficient in their jobs. But such high-performing organisations also tend to invest more in employee skill development to tackle emerging skill gaps, rendering the cost of skill mismatch smaller and the productivity gains for the firm larger.

Seems that shortage of STEM professionals and schools has more than a few reasons – this is a new concept of education that still needs to be critically approved, socially recognized and acknowledged by business sector. This is why it’s not surprising that we hear a collective “YES” from the participants of this course. From my point of view, I believe that there is almost tragic lack of information on the subject and that majority of students, teachers and professors have never even heard of STEM as a principal. I need to add that we in Serbia face tremendous economic challenges when it comes to public schools and universities, and that apart from all the problems mentioned, we are struggling to enable practice classes and strengthen specific skills that can only be learned in practical environment.

The EU STEM Coalition organizes extensive meetings each year, including the exchange of best practices in STEM education and the promotion of the Triple Propeller Approach.
In Romania, the restoration of healthy attitudes towards scientific and technical education is a mandatory step in triggering a real economic progress of our society. The first step, the most simple to accomplish, is that all teachers give up on the purely theoretical static education and implement an STEM type education in the educational process.
Students will be involved in concrete activities with technical, experimental support, so that they will participate with maximum determination in the formation of skills necessary for the future scientist, engineer, technician.
We must all be aware that STEM represents the concrete educational framework optimal to the age in which young people manifest and satisfy their curiosities, improve their skills in the use of tools and devices, use ingenuity and enhance their creativity.

Indeed, there is a lack of STEM skills, this is becoming increasingly visible through the difficulties employers face in finding a medium and highly skilled workforce. This is due to the inadequacy of the national educational curriculum with the requirements of the economic market. Although all political programs are promising to focus on education, investment in educational and human infrastructure (teachers) is minimal. I believe that besides the efforts of the state in this direction, it would also be of interest for employers to invest in educating and preparing their own labor force and to make a strategic partnership in this respect with the educational units.
