He was sacked the next day by Edward Heath because he believed it would heighten racial tensions. The Telegraph and The Times both condemned the speech and in the aftermath, racial attacks occurred. He remained an MP until 1974.

One victim said: “I have been here since 1955 and nothing like this has happened before. I am shattered.”

Despite this, the speech was hugely popular, with many striking over his dismissal and a huge rush of support in favour of restriction on immigration.
