Purpose

The purpose of the interview was to explore and to convince. The CNN reporter started with a question, and explored Trumps perspectives/the right-leaning argument that the media is biased. However at the end he interviewed an Atlantic journalist who had interviewed Trump before, and who was more left-leaning. The journalist argued that the reason Trump received different questions was because Trump does worse things, and the questions are just based on things he's said/done, which Biden hasn't. By ending on that reporter's argument, I think the main purpose was to refute the idea that Biden is treated differently.

Anyone watching CNN, most likely are left leaning Americans. The piece was intended for anyone questioning whether Joe Biden was getting the same treatment in interviews from the media as trump does.

The fact that the audience they were catering to was a left leaning one may have influenced how the argument was structured. Throughout the video it became clear that the piece was intended to bring attention to possible media bias towards Biden, however, the title of the segment was phrased as a question. They did include clips demonstrating how the right and republican media such as fox news may have a slightly unreasonable standpoint on the issue, however that may have been in order to gain more credibility when pointing out the flaws in media coverage by the left.

Ethos: uses video clips; attempts to be impartial through the journalist perspective, Biden's perspective, and Trump's perspective; credible sources (brought on a news reporter who had questioned both Biden and Trump)

Logos: Trump claims he is treated unfairly therefore CNN provides new clips to allow viewers to decide

Pathos: The news station refrained from appealing to Pathos in order to seem as unbiased as possible. The purpose of the news is to lay down the facts, straight and simple. It would be irresponsible as a primary source of information for millions of people for a news station to incorporate personal bias into their broadcasts.

When fox news bashes Biden for claiming he is being babied since he has it easier than most candidates, the tone of the reporter shifts from more of a neutral tone which didn't push towards presenting Biden in a negative light, to a more defensive and uplifting tone where he begins to back up Biden more and boost him up.

Overall tone of CNN reporter is more neutral.
