"destructive silence causes bad things to happen" is a theme because no one in the story sticks up. I think that the people know that it is wrong to kill others  but they are to afraid to stick up for one another. Mrs. Adams tried to stick up for the people but she just gives up.

In the lottery no one shows love. In stead they just kill the person that is picked and move on instead of standing up.
