MayoClinic.org says Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Is a condition from trauma to the head repeatedly. It is most commonly found in athletes who play football. It is also found in boxing and other sports where there is a bunch of repeated trauma to the brain. It can cause behavioral issues, lack of focus, memory loss, and how people interact with people in their social life. It causes your brain to shrink and deteriorate. CTE has been tested clinically, and they have found that a protein by the name of tau protein, which is formed in the brain when there is force applied to the brain. In a normal person's brain, the brain tends to heal itself, but not in the brain of CTE patients. . CTE has been seen as atrophy in which the brain tends to lose weight. The concerns on CTE and its symptoms have been high due to the fear of the unknown, not knowing whether this disease is a part of the person's life because the disease cannot be detected unless there is an autopsy, which means that person must be deceased in order fulfill the diagnosis, leaving people stranded, and not knowing that they are living with a brain disease.

The game of football is a high impact sport that can cause major injuries, but the most common injuries are aimed toward the head and neck area. Here recently in the national football league there has been major concern over the development of the disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). “Dr. Bennett Omalu, a neuropathologist, was the first to discover and publish findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in American football players while working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pittsburgh.”

The National Football League (NFL) has done some things. In today's game it is all about strategies, so the NFL wanted to cut back on the head injuries, so they started to go back to the basics of the game, developing techniques that the athletes can use to be successful, and at the same time protect athletes from head-to-head contact. For instance, linemen are used to engaging with the defender head-to-head, in today's game line are taught to take steps back and engage with their hands and to shuffle there to keep the defender in front of them. This method is being used all through the league, but in this scenario, it is being used by the chargers. The NFL, pop Warner, and NCAA have all agreed that brain trauma is caused by repetitive motion to the head The NFL has made obligations to limit the amount of contact in practice at the beginning of the season, to try preventing excessive hits to the head. The NFL is making “meaningful adjustments to the game will require reforms both subtle and significant—in playing rules, culture, equipment, coaching techniques and practice cadence.” Many people believe that the NFL should change the way the players play, because they believe that it changes the overall perception of brain injuries and improves the game of football.The NFL in today's time is focusing on improving the game of football because of the history and how damaging it was to the game of football. Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of murdered, then he eventually killed himself in prison. His brain was sent off for testing. They later find out that he was living with CTE and there have been several players who have taken their own life such as “Junior Seau, Dave Duerson, Andre Waters, Ray Easterling.” All of these players experienced some sort of mental breakdown, which lead to events that could have been out of their control because their mind was not functioning properly, which influences the player and the people that there around. In this situation Hernandez thought it would lead to a violent act. This also influenced the NFL, because the Hernandez family to action to file a lawsuit against the NFL. Hernandez was not in the NFL for a long time, he was young, but in a short amount of time his brain was severely damaged.

Technology

Technology and the fate of the NFL. Technology is particularly important when it comes to CTE, and the NFL wants the technology to help players and to detect and prevent injuries, to improve the game of football. A company called Quanterix developed a way to detect concussions through testing blood, to give faster and smarter information. This company sought out to find information on CTE. The NFL is highly support of the idea of finding CTE in living individuals, but they also know if this discovery is possible there is an elevated risk that the NFL will diminish, and people, and players will have different thoughts about the game. From the test in the lab researchers noticed that there are not any antibody’s that stick to the tau protein, that Pet, and scan and are the best ways to diagnose CTE in people who are alive. If the researchers could detect CTE in the living, there would be more information on how to prevent, and even cure the disease. This is important for the future of the NFL, to keep the game alive, for people can enjoy the game that they loved and worked so hard for. The NFLs main concern is to have answers for this problem, which should be their primary goal, considering that CTE is only going to increase. The talks of CTE are becoming more relevant and people are worried, and it can change the game and there should be an even greater focus on the safety of the players.

It is alarming to see what these individuals were going through; these studies show that the players sustained severe head trauma in the game. In the brain scan that was done 90% of the college athletes had CTE. These players would experience apathy, depression, explosively. this was the biggest study that was done on CTE patients, and here is where they found that all the players head trauma consists of repetitive motion to the same area. Football is a violent sport, and it comes with many risks, which could be severe for the health of future athletes.
