1. Civil Rights Amendment of 1964 -which banned discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, and gender- created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to handle discriminatory claims. The EEOC enforced the ban on gender discrimination, declared sex-segregated job ads illegal, and banned employers from refusing women for jobs that men used to do.
In 1972, Congress extended the power of the EEOC to allow them to give working parents money for child expenses. This helped working women to give them the chance to have a family and work without the fear of not being able to supply for their family.

2. Title IX put a ban on gender discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Before this, women weren't allowed to go to the same colleges as men or not as many colleges. They also had less academic scholarships and athletic scholarships. After Title IX passed, women immediately started to outnumber men in colleges and more women started playing sports since they were able to get aid for college.

3. Roe vs. Wade -US Supreme Court case in 1973- gave women the right to choose to have an abortion during the first three months or pregnancy. This gave women the power, if they chose to use it, to decide whether or not to have a child. This was a big issue earlier for women because they weren't able to have a family and have an education or job at the same time.

How the Civil Rights Movement Affected the Women's Movement

The Civil Rights Movement showed women that changes can be made with nonviolence, enough time, and support. Women saw how African Americans were able to march and form groups such as SNCC and CORE that pressured government and law officials to make changes. SNCC and CORE are the civil rights groups that inspired women to create NOW to fight for their rights. Also, the nonviolent aspect of the Civil Rights Movement shared the success of different methods of protest that the Women's Movement came to us. The powerful African American women who marched and fought for civil rights also were prominent members of the Women's Movement and people looked up to them because they were so successful in fighting for civil rights.
