Target Learners: Further Education students studying the Communications module in the level 5 Education and Training course in Whitehall College of Further Education.

At the end of the session, students will be able to...
1. Identify the different types of writing
2. Distinguish which writing style is suitable in a range of different contexts
3. Compose a small body of text in 1 type of writing

1. Discussion/Collaboration

Purpose: To find out the students prior knowledge of the different types of writing.
Activity: Students will follow the provided the link to Mentimeter and answer 3 thought provoking questions on the topic. They can see other members of the classes responses and react to them with hearts if they agree with others ideas.
Timing: 10 minutes

2. Acquisition

Purpose: To provide the students with a baseline of knowledge on the different types of writing.
Activity: Google Slides presentation for students to read and take notes on.
Timing: 10 mins

3. Investigation

Purpose: To further students understanding of the different writing styles through finding real world examples.
Activity: Students will be tasked with collecting 4 different examples of writing styles that they can find on the internet (Example: Newspaper articles, blogs, instagram post, movie reviews ect. ) They will compile these resources on Padlet.
Timing: 15 mins
Resources: The Internet, Padlet

4. Practice

Purpose: To improve students comprehension and judgment on when each different writing is appropriate.
Activity: Students will give 3 reasons as to why they think the author of each example they found chose to write in that style. This will be completed on Padlet, with each answer typed underneath the examples that they had previously compiled.
Timing: 15 mins
Resources: Padlet and may need to access the google slides from early to help with information.

5. Acquisition

Purpose: To expose the students to the knowledge and resources required in order to create their own body of writing in a chosen writing style.
Activity: Students will use the various resources provided on Quizlet, such as flashcards, to further understand how to effectively compose a body of text in each of the writing styles

6. Production

Purpose: To get the students to put their learnings into practice by creating a piece of writing that showcases their abilities and understandings.
Activity: Students will choose one of the writing styles that was detailed in the google slides and produce a body of text in said style. This will only be around 500 words.
Timing: 20 mins
Resources: Google Docs/Word, may need to refer to Google Slides.

7. Practice

Purpose: To evaluate what the students have learned and get feedback on how they think the session went.
Activity: Students will complete a Google forums that will be designed as a quiz to reaffirm what the students have learnt throughout the session. It will also include a segment for feedback on the session.
