The mothers in the early chapters all have in common that at first they come off sweet and perfect, but they quickly can turn around a be violent, or threaten people they know for questioning their authority. This is a negative thing for those you are the victim in the situations, but it is a positive because it is Gabo's way of showing that women in the story become more comfortable with their voice and over time it could be foreshadowing to them using it more. That is also why the comparisons between the mothers and daughters are so important because it shows the growth and change in women's minds over a generation.

I feel that Angela's mother reaction when Bayardo San Roman returned her in disgrace to her parents was unexpected. It was surprising to me that her mom actually beat her for being returned her, I thought she was going to go easier on her and maybe talk to her about how Angela felt. It was definitely unreasonable because she had no details on how Angela lost her virginity, she just straight up beat her without wanting to learn more of the behind story.

The twin brothers took so much offense to Santiago Nasar for dishonoring their sister because (although I wouldn't say they were friends) they where close and Santiago probably knew that it was important to the family that Angela got married to someone with so much money. In their eyes Santiago messed that up for the family and kinda destroyed their honor. (The second half of the question is worded weird but) In the case of Angela telling the truth, I don't think they were wrong, stating before that Santiago knew it was important for Angela to marry into someone with money and ruining the honor for the VIcario family.

The story revolves around this Latin American culture and the "social norms" having this unfair advantage for the bride to be pure and a virgin is something that is normal. Woman are seen to be pure before they are married, and they are born to be wives and clean after their husbands. While the husbands role is to work and feed the family, a working man doesn't need to seem pure, he needs to seem masculine and emotionless.

I think the importance of the bride being pure is because religion is now really starting to intertwine with the book, why the characters do what they do. We saw how Angela was beaten for not being a virgin on her wedding night. I think the male dominance and why they don't have the same standards is because all through out history almost everywhere males have been dominant.
