During the 1950s, many southern states had poll taxes and literacy tests for an African-AMerican to be able to vote. MArtin Luther King Jr. wanted to put an end to this so 25,000 African- Americans marched and gathered at the capitol to put an end to this. The civil rights movement is why all races are able to vote today and can do so without having fear of their life.

In the 1970s, the age limit on voting rights was changed to eighteen years old. This was because during the Vietnam war many 18 year olds were being drafted into war and this made them upset because they were old enough to risk their life but not old enough to vote for electives. Later on The Supreme Court changed the voting age to eighteen years old.
