1.What were the Jim Crow laws?
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s played a crucial role in dismantling the Jim Crow system, with significant achievements such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which aimed to end racial segregation and discrimination in various aspects of American society. Despite the legal dismantling of Jim Crow laws, the struggle for racial equality and justice continues in the United States to this day.

2.What did the laws promote and stifle?
The Jim Crow laws promoted racial segregation and discrimination while stifling the civil rights, social mobility, and opportunities of African Americans. It was a dark period in American history that took many decades of activism, legal challenges, and social change to overcome. The Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century played a pivotal role in dismantling the Jim Crow system and advancing civil rights for all Americans.

3.In the 1930s in the south what would have seen?
The 1930s in the Southern United States were marked by deeply ingrained racial segregation, economic disparities, and a climate of racial discrimination and violence.

In Langston Hughes' poem I too, the use of imagery helps us understand an important message about the good and life is near us. This is seen in lines 16-17 when the speaker says They’ll see how beautiful l am and be “ashamed”.The ashamed- sounds powerful and doesn’t care about protesting implying the great future. This imagery helps the reader view the great change coming, he encourages the other black to keep going, the racial prejudice that is disagreeable and will dissolve in favor of equality. Hughes' intent through this image is to imply that even if no one cares about us， in the future they will see how beautiful we are.

In Langston Hughes's poem I too, the use of imagery helps us to understand another important message about the speaker who thinks the future will come soon and doesn't fear power.

The main reason why people choose to live in Singapore is because the climate is good, and it’s a clean place to live. However, as a long-time community volunteer here, what I see the most around our community is litter. Think back to when you came to school, did you see any garbage around you? Have you ever bent down to pick up garbage and bin it? We all have a part to play in protecting the environment. How would you feel if the trash blocked your way to school？ We all have the power to solve this problem..

If you've watched any UN environment videos, you'll understand how the build-up of land-based trash destroys marine life. It not only robs marine creatures of their habitats but also endangers land animals, making their lives miserable. Animals often mistake garbage as a delicious meal, unaware that it marks the beginning of their suffering. If we carry on like this, all those precious animals will die out, exactly like the dodo. In Sri Lanka, a massive garbage heap led to the tragic deaths of ten elephants and numerous other animals. And this is happening in other countries too. Would you be the compassionate person willing to make a small effort to save an animal's life?

For those who have studied biology, the term "food chain" is important. In the food chain. All animals, including humans, depend on others for their survival. If the habitat of one level is threatened, that means the others will starve and the whole food chain is disrupted. This is what trash can do in the world.

Some may ask, 'Are we merely going to stand by and watch the situation unfold?' My answer is a resounding no! While we might not possess the immediate power to change the world, it doesn't mean we can’t do so in the future. Right now, we can make meaningful contributions to environmental protection ourselves.

Consider this: if every student spends just one second to pick up and discard the litter they encounter into the trash can, the combined efforts of 3,000 individuals in our school would result in 3,000 fewer pieces of garbage. This collective action could save our cleaners valuable time, which would free them to do other environmental work. At the moment, our litter is stopping this vital activity. We mustn’t forget too, that dropping litter in Singapore is illegal in order to protect the environment. The sooner we learn this lesson at school, the better.

As NLCS students, we not only have the ability but also the responsibility to contribute to the formidable goal of environmental protection. Instead of spending time playing video games, consider redirecting that time to help save the environment. As superstar Jackie Chan once said: "No matter how powerful you are in the game, it's just an illusion, not real. So, don't be greedy for play and obsession." Why waste time on games when we can make it real? Let's begin to change our surroundings, and make time more valuable. Start now rather than tomorrow. A beautiful world will become perfect as we take action. Let's spend our time in protecting the environment and making our world more beautiful!

Imagine a world where the air is clean and fresh. Oh my goodness, that’s so good. Children can play at home and outside without breathing in toxic gases; plants and animals thrive in the unpolluted air. The healthcare system is not overloaded with heart and respiratory illnesses and people have more money in their pockets. This sounds ideal doesn’t it? It could be our world, and I’m here to tell you how.

People might say, ‘the government tells us it’s ok to smoke’, so how can we doubt this? Are you dumb????? Governments earn a lot of money by selling cigarettes to people so they are not going to tell you that it’s bad for your health. They also earn a lot of money from advertising cigarettes which persuade us to smoke. Is this what you want for yourself or your family? Do you believe everything the government tells you?

In fact, the highest number of smokers in the world can be found in Micronesia, in the South Pacific, where 52% of the population smokes. Teenaged smokers account for 32% of this number. This is just the highest: all over the world there are countries where over 38% of the population smokes. Wow! This is shocking. In 2023, don’t most people know that smoking causes lung cancer and a whole range of other health problems?

You don’t even have to smoke to suffer health problems. Passive smoking is a huge problem for those families where even just one person smokes. Breathing in second-hand smoke causes asthma in children and can also persuade other people in the family to start smoking. All these smokers has a huge impact on our health services. Hospitals are full of people with heart problems, respiratory problems and serious health conditions.

Think about your social life. If you smoke, your clothes stink of smoke, your teeth go yellow and your breath smells. How will this look on those selfies with your girlfriend? She’ll be embarrassed by you!! If you have a girlfriend who doesn’t smoke, she might break up with you. If you both smoke, when you have children, will they also smoke? How terrible is this? It’s a horrible picture and it doesn’t have to happen. We all have choices.

Let’s do a maths question. What we know is that a packet of cigarettes costs $12 for a pack of 5. On average a person will smoke 5 cigarettes a day. This means that they will spend $4380 per year on cigarettes. That’s amazing!! Over ten years it’s $43000. Think what you could do with that! You could buy a car, but you are spending it on smoking.

If we make smoking illegal, we’ll save more people’s lives and save people money. Countries should not make money out of making people unhealthy. Healthy people make a country stronger. Change the law now for all our sakes!

In a dilapidated town, there is a young boy whom people affectionately call "Xiao Yan." He doesn't attract attention through flashy looks or arrogant demeanor but rather through his unwavering determination and keen observation. Xiao Yan earns his living by doing odd jobs, toiling away at the street market from dawn till dusk, struggling hard to make ends meet. His indomitable spirit and optimistic attitude towards life are admirable; despite life not being very fair to him, he never gives up his pursuit of beauty.

In his youth, Xiao Yan experienced a thrilling event when he encountered a powerful demonic beast during an expedition, resulting in him being severely injured. This incident altered the course of his life; although he recovered physically, his movements were no longer as agile, and people began to regard him with pity and awe. The accident inflicted significant psychological trauma on him, often leaving him feeling helpless and depressed. However, he was not defeated by these difficulties but instead faced life's challenges with a strong will.

In his modest abode, Xiao Yan has created a simple yet cozy space. Despite its small size, he has decorated it with care, adorning the walls with his favorite martial arts classics and motivational quotes. A simple desk holds his books on cultivation techniques, while by the bedside rests an ancient sword he treasures. This space reflects Xiao Yan's character: down-to-earth, resilient, and filled with hope. No matter the challenges he faces, he finds strength and courage to continue his journey within this small space.

On her way to Narita she saw an old man wearing colorless clothes was o the danger of getting struck by a truck while he was walking on crossroad. The sound of brake has echoed, the old man falled down on the road. However he still alive.Red blood splashed on the exactly behind of him, it was the girl. She sacrificed herself to let the old man escape the emergency of life. After a second, her spirit raised toward to sky, looking down the place where she were in the road, everyone was povicing by the accident happened suddenly, but single person looks very calm, he approach to the body covered by the vive red and touched it like petting a cat the place was curved by light.

Everything got blurry in her eye and strong pain forced Furina to fall asleep…

Furina awoke with a start. She looked around her in bewilderment. She recognised her bedroom and all her familiar things, but her head could not comprehend what had happened. Her memory of the previous day was blurred and although she felt at ease with her surroundings, she felt displaced, as if she shouldn’t be there. She turned to see her friend Nahida sleeping peacefully beside her.

She decided to set aside her unease and embrace the new day. The sounds of music and celebration came floating through her window and she looked outside. A sea of color met her eyes as a great parade passed by, with highly decorated floats, huge dancing creatures, people dressed in wonderland costumes throwing flowers and candies, bands playing, whistles blowing… the whole thing added up to an immersive experience of exuberant noise and color and joy. Furina got out of bed so as not to disturb Nahida and went out to join the throng.

As Furina plunged into the crowd, a particular figure caught her eye. He was seated on a float covered with flowers, which wafted a heady perfume to all the bystanders cheering him on. His face was kind and a glow of benevolence seemed to surround him as he threw candies out to a troupe of children chasing his float. He smiled and laughed at the joy of the children as they caught one and hurried off to show their parents their prize.

“Hey, Furina, you made it!!!” came a shout from somewhere in the crowd. Furina spun round to see her friend Nahida weaving through the people towards her. “I can’t believe you’re here, you never come to this! I’m so glad to see you.” Her face was shining.

Furina was startled, “There’s a first time for everything!” she replied carefully, as a memory of how she used to avoid exactly these situations slowly crept into her mind. How curious. She was genuinely enjoying this parade, but why?

But there was no time to reflect, as Nahida dragged her off in the direction of the market, yelling, “ Come on, time to get some food!”

The market was heaving with people shopping for the Seven Fresh tables feast. They watched as shoppers bargained for tree king mushrooms, moon lotus, roses, sun drop fruit, peaches and so on. Presently, they stopped at a stall selling alchemical divinations. Nahida and Furina chose a random stone from the table and gave it to the stallholder. He put the stone in a mysterious solution which he then burnt. A strange blue flame flickered up from the glass and the stone started to fizz. The man was paying close attention and started to murmur as he saw the portents. He told them he could see a moon, which represents lies and illusions. This left Furina with a deep anxiety about the future. Gradually, a mist was clearing in her memory and images were becoming sharper about how she had got here. She was still not seeing the complete picture but felt she was emerging from a fog.

The sweet smell of candies drew them to the Knight of the Flowers she had noticed earlier. He showed them four candies, one of which was a bad one. They must choose one. There were four bottles of candy and Furina chose the middle one which was the chill flavor. To her great horror, her mouth felt like it was on fire!

Out of the corner of her eye, Furina noticed a commotion. A man was trying to grab the bag of a shopper, and waving a knife around. People were starting to panic. Furina rushed over shouting, “Hey! What are you doing? Leave her alone!”. She kicked his knife away and made a grab for him. All of a sudden, many more angry looking men arrived and Furina sensed that something was going wrong. A piercing scream announced the arrival of Dehya, Furina’s friend with serious kung fu skills. She threw herself into the mob, kicking and striking, yelling, “Get out of here!! I can handle this now.”

“Wow! That was impressive!” they said to each other, trembling with fear and adrenaline. Nahida suddenly said, “I know what we need after that! A good meal at Miso to calm our nerves.”

They approached Miso. This was one of the most famous restaurants in Narita and Furina knew she was in for a treat. The scent of the ocean came wafting out of the restaurant and a contented hubbub greeted their ears. They immediately felt comfortable and enjoyed the warm sight of happy diners inside. It was a hot summer evening and Furina felt the pace of life gently slowing down. They went inside.

They ordered the best dish on the menu: Thai green curry. Juicy prawns bathed in coconut, spicy sauce with lemongrass and ginger, alongside fragrant jasmine rice. Furina was in heaven. The two girls took their time over their meal, savoring every mouthful. Eventually, the sun dipped down behind the horizon and it was time to leave.

The streets were beginning to empty now and the pale moon could be seen emerging from behind the buildings. Furina reflected that this had been a strange day, but a good one. She felt happy as she settled down in her comfy bed. Sleep came quickly.

The next day when she woke up, Furina was still feeling that sense of satisfaction. Sounds of a carnival came floating up from the street and she looked outside. A colorful parade was passing by and she went out to join it, as if for the first time.

Nahida joined her and they made their way to the candy stall. A distant memory crept back into Furina’s mind that this was somewhere she had been before. Could it be true? As the stallholder offered them the choice of four candy jars, she suddenly knew that the middle one was the chili flavor. A cold hand of fear gripped her heart as she tasted the chili in the candy. She thought, “This is unbelievable. It can’t be happening. Why????”

Again, the attempted theft, the gangster and Dehya all played out, as if on a loop. Furina was beginning to panic. She knew that in a minute, they would be sitting in Miso, enjoying another Thai green curry, exactly as before. Nahida seemed to be oblivious to the fact that time was repeating itself but Furina was sweating.

In a run-down kind of town, there is a young boy who goes by the name of Xiao Yan. He’s not flashy or arrogant and doesn’t attract attention. He’s a modest boy who just gets on with his work at the street market in an unassuming way. People see this and have a quiet respect for his determination. What they don’t know is that Xiao Yan has a secret.

One fateful day five years ago, Xiao Yan returned home from school to find a scene of horror at his home. Something or someone had destroyed everything he knew to be safe and secure. His parents lay fatally injured inside and the wreckage of their home lay in fragments all around. Xiao Yan ran to his mother’s side, speechless with shock. Despite her injuries, she gestured to him to come close, and whispered in his ear.

“Son, you must take my ring. It will protect you from those who mean you harm. You are now the last of your kind. It is your destiny to save humankind from the terrors which surround us all.” She lay back and closed her eyes as she drifted away.

Xiao Yan could not speak for the pain and anguish in his heart. He lay by his mother and wept; for how long he did not know. Through his agony, he remembered his mother’s words. he removed the ring from her finger and slipped it on his own. As he did so, a powerful rush of energy swept through his body and to his amazement, an old man jumped out of the ring and stood before him.

“Xiao Yan, you must listen to me. Those who killed your parents are coming for you. You must follow my teachings in order to defeat them. We don’t have much time. You only have one day to learn ways to defend yourself which it would take others ten years to learn. Xiao Yan, I know this sounds impossible but I’m the only one you can trust in this matter.”

Xiao Yan listened open-mouthed but found himself wanting to trust the old man. In the hours that followed, he learnt fighting skills, defence skills and movement skills which he found he could perform with ease. He felt strong, he felt more powerful than ever in his life before and he felt invincible. The old man was satisfied that he was ready and the time was drawing near.

That night Xiao Yan slept with one eye open and just before dawn, he heard the tiniest rustling of bushes outside his window. With all his senses on high alert, he sprang out of bed and with a blood-curdling yell, confronted his enemies. The next three hours were a blur of violent movement, shrieking, whirling and impact for Xiao Yan. He tried his best to use all the skills the old man had taught him, but at times, his resolve faltered and he could not push the thought from his mind that his enemy was growing stronger.

They sensed this and piled on more pain, more pressure, outwitting Xiao Yan wherever they could. Xiao Yan was almost on his knees, desperate to regain some ground, when he heard the old man whispering in his ear, “Watch his movement. His legs are not stable. Attack his legs.”

Xiao Yan looked and felt a glimmer of hope. His adversary was unbalanced and he struck with all his strength. At this moment, the towering brute fell, and Xiao Yan seized the advantage. He finished his enemy with a mighty blow and the battle was over. Xiao Yan fell back and lay on the ground, his energy spent and a wave of euphoria sweeping through him. “You did well, my son. Your parents would be proud of you. Now we must continue…..”
