The Montreal Protocol was an agreement set in 1987, to protect the ozone layer of the earth. The ozone layer protects the earth from harmful UV radiation, it acts as an invisible shield to the planet. The agreement implemented against using substances that were dangerous towards depleting that layer. "With full implementation of the Montreal Protocol, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that Americans born between 1890 and 2100 are expected to avoid 443 million cases of skin cancer, approximately 2.3 million skin cancer deaths, and more than 63 million cases of cataracts, with even greater benefits worldwide."

The Brundtland Report stated that critical global environmental problems were primarily the result of the enormous poverty of the South and the non-sustainable patterns of consumption and production in the North. It called for a strategy that united development and the environment – described by the now-common term «sustainable development.

https://www.are.admin.ch/are/en/home/media/publications/sustainable-development/brundtland-report.html

"Anti-fur organizing also began in the late 1980s in West Michigan and we have some details from archival materials on that work... Cole Dorsey was head of the Anti-Fur Committee. A high school student at the time, Cole was deeply committed to resisting animal cruelty, especially what was perpetrated by the fur industry."

https://grpeopleshistory.org/2015/07/15/anti-fur-campaigns-were-part-of-west-michigan-for-animals-direct-action-efforts/
