Openers and Brain Breaks

Openers -> focus on narrowing options or making choices ACCESSIBLE:

-Writing about names

-Writing about a song, forming a story around it, writing a critique, writing about personal meanings

-Writing a small POV from someone fictional or non-fictional

-Where I want to go and three things to bring with me

-love letters, hate letters, and breakup letters

-collaborative short story telling (adjust per school appropriate)

-I believe writing - what do they believe in, why do they believe in it and how do we support each other

Brain Breakers:

-This or That

-Quick coloring activity

-Musical chairs

-Heads Up 7-up

-circle, have students count one by one (start over when double talk or number out of order)

In classroom activities

-fishbowl discussions
-backchanneling discussions
-speed dating ideas (necessary for getting kids to communicate ideas about classroom goings-on or getting to know each other)
-Jamboard for favorite things (low-stakes questions just to see how students can relate to each other)
-chalk talk (similar to graphic organizer/ mind map)-group work in a silent setting, one at a time to the board
-GIST - using only x amount of words, summarize xyz topic
-racial topics/ multicultural discussion: red light, green light -> circle, one speaker at a time, students had red/ green paper to flag)
