Can Nature Unlock the Best Version of Ourselves?
by Morgan Inocencio

Nature has always been where I go to reset, reflect, and grow. What started as a love for hiking turned into a realization: the natural world doesn’t just heal us, it teaches us. This curation explores how stepping into nature can lead to self-discovery and spark creativity.

Moving from the coastside to Colorado’s mountains.

I grew up by the coast, where the sound of crashing waves and the salty breeze were a constant backdrop to my life. The ocean was my escape, my place to think, and where I felt most at peace. When I moved to Colorado, I left behind the shoreline and found myself surrounded by towering mountains instead. At first, I missed the ocean deeply, but the mountains quickly taught me something new: they offered the same sense of freedom and perspective, just in a different form. Nature has always been a place where I can reconnect with myself, whether it’s the endless horizon of the sea or the rugged peaks of Colorado. But for so many people, nature is just a nice view, not a place of discovery and growth. This project is my way of sharing how nature, in all its forms, has shaped me and can inspire all of us to think differently, feel more deeply, and grow in ways we didn’t expect.

Biomimicry: Using Nature’s Perfect Innovation Systems to Design the Future.

Western Bonime’s exploration of biomimicry highlights how nature’s systems offer both groundbreaking technological solutions and insights into personal and collective growth. Examples like the kingfisher-inspired Shinkansen Bullet Train and fungi-based ecosystems show the potential of nature-inspired designs to solve modern challenges sustainably. Bonime also connects biomimicry to self-discovery, emphasizing how nature fosters creativity, resilience, and personal growth. This aligns with my own research on how nature inspires transformation. The “30 Days of Reconnection” program illustrates how mindful engagement with nature can reduce stress and enhance innovation. Biomimicry not only guides future design but also deepens our understanding of identity and purpose, showing how aligning with nature’s balance leads to meaningful, sustainable living.

Bonime, Western. “Biomimicry: Using Nature’s Perfect Innovation Systems to Design the Future.” Forbes, 12 July 2020, www.forbes.com/sites/westernbonime/2020/07/12/biomimicry-using-natures-perfect--innovation-systems-to-design-the-future.

Nature's Blueprint: Unlocking Innovation Through Biomimicry

Watching Marie Z. Bourgeois's TEDx talk on biomimicry made me realize how innovation in nature mirrors our self-discovery journey. Just as nature evolves through trial and error, we uncover deeper aspects of ourselves over time. Nature’s solutions are sustainable, and similarly, personal growth is about continuous reflection and adaptation. Biomimicry thrives through collaboration, much like self-discovery, which requires integrating all parts of our lives. This idea of looking inward and outward for inspiration has helped me trust my experiences and adapt with resilience, knowing my growth is a sustainable, evolving process. True self-discovery is an ongoing journey of aligning with my values and the world around me.

Trail to Truth

Hiking the Colorado Trail, I felt deeply connected to the landscape and to myself. Each step, through towering pines, open meadows, and rugged peaks, mirrored life's many paths, some easy, others challenging. The solitude of the trail gave me space to reflect, and with each uphill climb, I found moments of inner growth. The vastness of the landscape reminded me of life's possibilities, yet it was the present moment that held the most beauty. The journey itself offered the greatest lessons, teaching me that growth comes not from avoiding challenges but from facing them with patience. As I climbed higher, I realized that self-discovery often happens when we simply walk the path.
