Abolitionists were people that believed slavery was wrong and evil. They were primarily people from the North. They wanted slavery to be made illegal throughout the country. Abolitionists such as John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Harriet Beecher Stowe made it their mission to spread the news of how evil slavery was and to convince as many people as possible. The South, however, relied on slavery for labor to work the fields. They were fearful that the end of slavery would impact their daily life as they relied heavily on the slaves.

There were tensions between the North and South over power and rights. As the United States continued to expand westward,
each new state added became a battleground between the two sides, shifting power between the North and the South.

The Civil War began when the South left the United States and formed their own new country called the Confederate States of America. The South decided to leave when Abraham Lincoln was elected president - they no longer wanted to be part of the US. They felt they had the right to leave. Starting with South Carolina, eleven states left. Abraham Lincoln said they did not have the right to leave the United States and sent in troops to stop the South from leaving. This began the Civil War.
