They were primarily people from the North. They wanted slavery to be made illegal throughout the country.  Abolitionists such as John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Harriet Beecher Stowe made it their mission to spread the news of how evil slavery was and to convince as many people as possible. The South, however, relied on slavery for labor to work the fields.
