Welcome: Assuming this new gradebook system informs us of student's birthday's I will still use that as one  strategy. Having everyone take a moment to celebrate the special day with their classmate.

Framing: Include a clear objective for the day in addition to the objective for the unit so students are clear on the direction we are going.

Direct Instruction: Demonstrating concepts before giving students time to attempt the concepts on their own.
