Name your favorite book, TV show, or Movie. Name one type of conflict in the story line (ie: man vs. society) and explain. How did that conflict contribute to or "drive" the plot foward? What if you took that conflict away: does it change the plot or affect the outome/ending in any way? Was that conflict necessary for the story line? How /why? by Alishia Duncan

One of my favorite books/TV shows is MDZS/The Untamed (respectively). One of the conflicts is Character vs. Society. Wen Ning is a side character who is a part of the evil Wen Clan. He feels that he owes his life to Wei Wuxian because he saved his life once. The other major clans, including the Jiang Clan, which Wei Wuxian is a part of, oppose the Wen Clan. Wen Ning wants to help Wei Wuxian recover his brother and his adoptive parent's dead bodies from the Wen Clan's clutches. He suffers extreme consequences for this and eventually loses his life. He's reincarnated as an animated corpse and works with Wei Wuxian. Without this conflict and plot line, Wei Wuxian's brother, Jiang Cheng, would be dead. Jiang Cheng eventually kills Wei Wuxian (who also gets reincarnated, and this is the main plot line.) Without this, the main plot line, with Wei Wuxian's death and reincarnation and return to the cultivation world, could not happen.

It contributed to the plot because every movie was leading them to that point and that conflict and fight is what brought the avengers back together after an argument. The conflict as necessary because it sets up how the future avengers and superheros are affected by what Thanos did and how they are fixing society.

One conflict in the story is Man vs Society this is because Bruce Wayne sees his parents death and they get killed by the average to a bad person on the street during a robbery. The conflict drives the plot by showing the main character descend into madness and desperation when he finds out his entire life was scripted for a TV show. An example of this is, in one episode one of the main characters owns a casino. The construction on the casino was delayed because there was a civilian that refused to sell his home to the company. The casino owner hired a hit man to kill that civilian in order to obtain that land. If this wouldn't of happened, the other episodes would not have been made because this conflict kept spiraling and leading to other conflicts keeping the plot rolling

Book: Rich Dad Poor Dad
The main conflict presented within the book deals with Man vs. Society. This conflict deals with the concept of making money and knowing how the "game" of money works. His concept revolves around winning this game and discussing important fundamental ideas used that allowed him to become rich. Kiyosaki grew up in a poor area in Hawaii and had 2 dads– one rich and one poor. The poor dad was not really poor but had a poor mindset whilst the rich dad was the opposite. Through learning from his rich dad, he applied many of his concepts which had helped him move up and become rich. If he was inherently rich, then the book would have never been made and it removes the "taste" of the book. Starting off poor was not necessarily however, it does allow more people to relate to him, therefore, giving other more hope that they could become rich aswell.

John B was being falsley accused and charged with murdering a cop and recieved the death penalty as a consequence but Rafe Cameron was the one that killed the officer because his dad was being held at gunpoint so he took the matters into his own hands. This was necessary for the plot because it starts to show how twisted how Ward is with his son and how he will do anything in his power to try and protect him from getting into trouble with the law especially with murder. This caused a outrage in the banks because everyone knows eachother since its a small town so when people were hearing the information that John B supposedly murdered a cop it made the people think differently of him.

Step Brothers. In this movie you have Dale Doback and Brennan Huff who are two grown men that are forced to become brothers once their single parents get married. It started off rocky between the two, like when Brennan touched Dales drum-set which was the one rule Dale had. They even would get into fights in the front yard while neighbors stood and admired their stupidity. Everything they did and screwed up they did together. This man vs man arguing and fighting made them realize how similar they are and they ended up becoming best friends! If we took away them arguing and fighting, they may have never realized how similar they are. This could have changed the whole plot and moral of the story.

In Chainsawman one of the major conflicts is man vs society. Denji has the potential to becoming one of the strongest devils on earth and to prevent that from happening other devils from around the world are hired to try to kill him. It drives the plot forward because we get to see what type of abilities the other devils have, we see what plans they have in order to kill denji and some of the story gets funny but then they all just die so it kind of comes to a stop. If the conflict got taken away not so many of the characters would die. I feel as if the conflict was necessary because I liked reading it and seeing what would happen and it was really suspenseful, you wouldn't be able to tell that would happen next. Without the conflict denji wouldn't be able to come up with the strategies he had in order to keep from dying.

One of my favorite books is the Great Gatsby and its about a man named Gatsby on how he wants to marry this lady named daisy but he is worried about his past and how daisy would see it. The conflict is internal vs external because he made him self rich just to be with daisy but the way he became rich was through illegal ways. If you take away the conflict of Gatsby's past the story just becomes a very boring cliche love story. The conflict is very important as it builds the problem of why Gatsby is nervous to be with daisy.

One of my favorite tv series is The Fosters.
In this series one main conflict is Man vs. Society. The main character Callie is in the foster care system and her foster dad would abuse her and her little brother and the cops believed the foster dad. She goes from home to home and ends up in juvie again even though she is innocent but her background makes it hard to succeed. Callie is struggling with the society she is in because she has no voice as a foster kid. The conflict made it more interesting and created tension and made the audience want to know more. Also it created more drama. If the conflict was taken away it would completely change the plot and make the whole series pointless and boring. The whole series is based on foster care system and the issues of it and abuse of power. If callie wasnt a foster kid and if the issues with the society didnt exist it would not make any sense and the series wouldnt be a series.

My favorite book is the resistance. This is a character vs. society, because it is about a Jewish girl fighting for her people. This book takes place during world war 2, and a girl decides to join the resistance movement in her town. Shes joins so she can fight back against the Nazi's. Without her joining this movement there would be nothing to read about. It would be extremely boring to read about.

In the original Scooby Doo the only real conflict is character vs character. The mystery inc gang is going after the villains and trying to capture them while the villains are also trying to scare them away. If you take away the conflict there wont even be a story line to the show it would just be a 4 teenagers and a dog doing nothing but being boring.
