Johnny Cash was an American song writer and singer from the 1950s-60s. One of Cash's most famous songs, Folsom Prison Blues, was heavily plagiarized. The song, inspired off of Gordon Jenkins "Crescent City Blues", had many of Cash's same lyrics and melody. Cash eventually was sued and had to pay 75,000$. This could have been prevented if Cash had contacted Jenkins before and asked for permission, or they could have worked out some sort of reference or source to be entailed within Cash's song.
Source:
https://www.mprnews.org/story/2015/12/15/johnny-cash-gordon-jenkins-dispute-folsom-prison-blues
