I think in my family we have a pretty flat view of disability and that it's your fate and there's nothing you can do to improve it, while in reality interventions can help a lot. There's a balance between the "cure it" mentality and "accept your fate" mentality that I personally stand by that I think my parents do not.

I feel lucky that my mom raised me to think very similarly to how this class has taught me to. I was around a lot of children with ASD growing up and this allowed me to see them as their own people rather than seeing them as their diagnosis. I am thankful that I was raised this way because I feel that it has allowed me to be more open minded to all people.

Before this, i wasn't really exposed to this as much, but this has shown me that a disability is not necessarily a bad thing, it can be a strength also.

My cultural beliefs have further been supported from what I have learned in this class. Just because one person with a disability may need more services than someone else doesn't mean it is true for every single person. There are a wide variety of disabilities and not every single person should be treated the same. From my own personal experiences I have learned to not add labels to people with disabilities and think that it is all negative.

This class brings in the idea of understanding people on the autism spectrum's direct experience, and letting that drive interventions & supports, research, etc. Rather than thinking from my own values and projecting that onto the person on the spectrum. I also understand now that providing support to allow people with disabilities to be more independent and self-sufficient is so much more impactful than just giving and helping.

the beliefs I grew up with are pretty similar to what I have learned in this class. The only thing that's different is when I was younger (elementary school) I never had any interactions with kids on the spectrum, so there was a little fear that came along with the idea of autism. However as i grew older I became more exposed to it and even began volunteering to help people on the spectrum. What ive learned is that sometimes ignorance can create fear, even in young children. nevertheless I have always been taught to be accepting and kind to anyone and everyone

As I was raised, asking for help with things that were about my own well being were not really encouraged. I remember my parents not acknowledging some conditions I thought I might have--but after getting into college and taking this class, so much help is offered. I think I am not used to asking for the help since I was raised to deal with things on my own. With autism, so much help is offered--but I see the overlapping bout how difficult it is to get it or the different cultural beliefs every family has.

Throughout this class, I have learned that disability and people on the autism spectrum disorder constitutes a wide range. Growing up, disability always seemed to be narrow minded-either you have a disability or you do not. Within the course, I have learned that people's disabilities, as well as one's strengths and challenges, vary. Additionally, it is important to recognize that early intervention is important, especially with individuals on the autism spectrum.

In my personal experience, I learned that psychological disorders don't get better simply over time, and instead, seeking professional help such as therapy and psychiatry are what is truly needed. We shouldn't be afraid of "stigma"- we should seek support as needed.

I know more about this field and better understand how this impact's a persons life

My cultural beliefs differ not that much from what I have learned in this class. i've been able to communicate everything I learn to my family and to people around me and i often feel so glad that they are so open minded and accepting of new research. Even with older adults, it seems that they allow their cultural beliefs to transform as time goes by. More than that, I would say that I myself have been able to change the way I see the diagnosis of autism. When a family member was diagnosed, like many other families we were crushed but now my family and myself are able to think of it as something different but not necessarily bad.

I think that I have always been very open minded and accepting of others. I've always had a good understanding of disabilities from a medical perspective and my own perspective interacting with people with disabilities, but this class provided me with the first-person perspective that I was missing and has allowed me to better understand individual's experiences with their disabilities.
