My thoughts: I wonder about cultural differences in learning and UDL. When there are fundamental differences in cultural groups in the way people are expected to interact in groups or with teachers...how can these differences be melded and still include everyone, using the UDL approach?

How do use UDL without feeling like you are losing your mind in the classroom as a teacher? When you have a large range of diverse needs it can be very, very demanding on the teacher even when you are using a universal design...certain topics like math can be very tricky when someone is dividing and someone is barely adding.

I believe in UDL but also see a lot of teacher burnout. I am a mentor in my district to newly hired and trained teachers and this is by far a topic that overwhelms so many teachers. How do you not fail your students but also, make an engaging classroom experience?
Kassan

I sometimes wonder whether by removing barriers to learning we could also be reducing certain challenges that students have to face which could empower them when they overcome them. While this might sound a little unorthodox, I sometimes wonder if students do learn a lot from dealing with unreasonable or terrible teachers. It can force students to learn to deal with uncertainty, to look at the bigger picture, to deal with conflict in a positive way, or to preserve and overcome a challenge. In this way, a student can always look back on a challenge that they overcame and develop a stronger self-efficacy from it. (Of course, one could make the argument that since he/she overcame this challenge it was within their zone of proximal development which is good teaching practice anyways)

I think there may be some learning contexts and subjects where UDL would be impractical. For an example, driving tests. It is important to assess the learner's ability to operate a motor vehicle under sometimes stressful situations, so I do not think we can accomodate all learner needs or learning styles, nor can be allow alternative presentations of those skills, as it needs to be highly standardized. Likewise, I work in public safety. There will be limits to education options for fields in the trades, as they also need to demonstrate safe practice in very specific ways.
