Quinceañera by Judith Ortiz Cofer

Quinceanera is both a mirror and window in a few ways. For one, it reflects the idea of growing up, and how I went through the experience of becoming independent as a teenager, even though the experience being described is slightly different. But it also is a mirror into the experience the author is going through, and how it is different because of her culture and identity. For me, I never had a big party or ever dressed up nice, because it isn't a part of my culture. For the author though, she's almost seemed to be forced into this tradition, despite her seeming to dislike it. If I had to choose one though, I would say that this piece is more of a window into the experience of a quinceanera.

High School Training Ground by Malcolm London

High School Training Ground is incredibly relatable to me. It represents the problems with the school system, and while I may not live in Chicago, the problems he talks about are still very relevant to where I live. As he describes, the education system feels as though it's designed to weed out those who underperform, and teach kids to be either followers or leaders. The system is flawed, but despite all of the issues, it doesn't appear to be changing at all.

Speech to the Young: Speech to the Progress-Toward by Gwendolyn Brooks

Speech to the Young: Speech to the Progress-Toward by Gwendolyn Brooks is about growing up and facing the reality of the real world. She writes about the young not being ready, but that it'll inevitably come anyway. In many ways I relate to this, because I too was mostly in denial about life after high school, and how difficult it would be. This poem is a mirror that allows me to reflect on my own choices and resonate with the message. The biggest thing I relate to is not to live in the future or past, but in the present.

Puedo escribir los versos más tristes esta noche by Pablo Neruda

This poem by Pablo Neruda is a window into what it's like after a serious relationship. This narrator is speaking about his feelings for his lover, and how much he longs for her. I have never been in a serious relationship until now, and all is going good, so I've never truly experienced what it's like to breakup after such a long time. This poem is very insightful into the experience.

He Wishes For The Clothes Of Heaven by W. B. Yeats

This poem is a mirror into my own relationship with my significant other. It symbolizes the lack of giving any other gifts than your dreams, and in a very literal sense, I can relate to that. I don't give many gifts to my S.O. because we don't particularly value that. Instead we hope for our dreams to come true together. We may not give gifts to each other, but we do give each other our dreams.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show on amazon prime that provides me with new insight into the lives of people during the late 1950's, and how women comics were perceived. The main character struggles countless times because of public perception, and the idea that women can't be comics and must be "women-like." Her parents are surprised that she gets a job on her own, and insist that she get a husband after she has a divorce. These days, it's much more common and accepted to get a divorce, and it's expected for women to have jobs. As she pursues a career in comedy she's constantly judged for her bad language, specifically because she's a women.

My favorite work that I've read this semester is hands down "High School Battle Ground." The speech really resonates with me, because I can relate to it a lot. I have experienced the same things the speaker is talking about, and a lot of the problems he discusses I've discusses amongst my friends as well. I'm very passionate about the education system, and I would really like it to change. The speech as a whole is really impactful, and it makes me thing deeper about the education I've received.
