I believe that “one note is hard to listen to” (Ratliff 78) for listeners because they aren’t really understanding what they’re listening to, some people take it as maybe the musician is messing with their head, by trying to create a meaning with one note which may lead to the listener receiving mixed signals and different understandings of the piece. “When you listen to a single note sounded repeatedly and temporarily holding court, you are listening to either a form of resistance or play” (Ratliff 74). When the musician uses one note they are in a way breaking away from the stereotype that you need more than one note to create structure. One note is the simplicity and complexity of the musician and their piece, with this I mean that the simplicity comes from the obvious reason being that it’s one note. The complexity comes from the fact that this one note has several meanings and this tests the intellect of the listener.
