Kevin becomes infuriated by the fact that he can't get any inspiration for his writing. And says that "Five years is longer than it sounds".

Why it fits into identity -
After spending five years in the 1800s, Kevin has become a different person. Although he did help slaves escape to freedom, he did have to assimilate and act like a white male was expected to act in the Northern United States.

Rufus goes on to say how he loves Alice like Dana loves Kevin but then proceeds to make a pass at Dana telling her that Kevin has probably moved on because it's been five years. Eventually, Rufus tells her that if she doesn't get Alice to come to him, Alice will be beaten until she does. In response, Dana says "Is that what you call love?"
This relates to culture as it shows how in Rufus' time black women were treated as not much more than sexual objects.

The fight, page 111. This passage of the text illustrates a circumstance of Dana's mother on how when her car broke down, she waited for her brother to pick her up. While she waited, three people called the cops on her since she seemed suspicious. After Kevin's sister rejects Dana and Kevin's relationship, Dana speaks about how some people are just racist. However, she goes on to speak about how she thinks that, overall, times have changed and that people are more accepting. This section is important because, the issue that Dana and her mother faced in 1960 and then again in 1976, are similar because they deal with racist views towards Black people rooted in slavery. However, because Dana said she though the situation was better than that of her mom, is not entirely true. In fact, in her own life, her identity was assumed for her and that is still the case for people in today's society. Previous to this section, Dana's uncle urges her to marry a black man and not Kevin, so he is reinforcing to stay within her community because they would accept her more than Kevin's community.

page 134-135
In this scene Dana talks about how she views Tom Weylin as a man who's not necessarily a monster even with the immense amount of power he has over the slaves. She explains how Weylin is just doing "monstrous acts" that are legalized and permitted at the time. This part is also where she is speaking to Rufus, who explains that he will not let his father do anything horrible to her. This reveals a new dynamic of power/authority, as well as Rufus ensuring that at least some of Dana's dignity and human rights are preserved. It shows how Rufus somehow has control or authority over some of the actions of his father.

Creativity/Imagination v. Free Will

p. 140 - Dana gets back and she has some books with her which describe the history. Free will v. predestination comes up when she thinks about what might happen if Rufus makes a choice to tell other people about these things from the future - if he does, would it be drastically change the outcome for these people? OR is predestination a reality - and are these people simply destined to become heroes? Is our history simply destined to change? This applies to creativity and imagination because if we believe in predestination then we are less likely to make changes or even try to make changes because we can't imagine anything different, but if we believe in free will then we can imagine different lives and be more creative with the lives we choose

page 144-145
Dana describes how Sarah ran and managed the house while Margaret was away and a dispute that had occurred between the two of them. In this dispute, Dana questions why slaves should work hard as it isn't to their benefit, and they speak about slaves escaping which Sarah likens to heaven. Sarah also denounces the idea of black people writing books, and overall, is very shielded in terms of accepting anything that Dana mentions. It exhibits how Sarah buys into the identity of herself and other black people in this era that has been instilled in her practically since she was born. Dana also identifies her as an Uncle Tom and as being morally superior to her.
