Tolong Nuevo (Bayawan's original name) has existed as early as 1868 as part of Tolong Viejo, after 116 years (now Municipality of Sta. Catalina). It wasn't until 1872 that it was officially designated as a pueblo. Tolong Nuevo's name was changed to Bayawan in 1953. There is a legend around the name Bayawan. It all started on a Sunday morning when a catastrophe struck. One hostile "maghat" (Spanish missionary) entered a ceremony when a priest hoisted the Holy Host as an act of consecration when the Spaniards seized this location. The priest was murdered by the "maghat" who threw a lance at him. As a result, this anecdote clarifies the origins of Bayawan's name. The word "bayaw" means "to lift." Tolong Nuevo was the name given to Bayawan when it was founded by Spanish missionaries. The Municipality of Santa Catalina is currently known as a component of this area.
