How quickly will we be choosing our topics for the course/beginning research for these. I saw in the description for these weekly assignments that you want us to stay close to our topics so I was just wondering if these would be recurring throughout the course of if this was specific to just the final project.

Social Media Illiteracy

It has always fascinated me that people of all backgrounds seem to revert to a seemingly illiterate state when posting comments on social media. Even critically acclaimed writers will forgo punctuation, misspell words, and include an unreasonable amount of emojis when commenting on videos. I think it could be interesting to see why people seem to think that social media is a place of informality to the point that oftentimes it is nearly impossible to understand what is being written.

One way to research this could be to interview people and figure out if they use formal style writing when on social media and why they use the technique that they do. Another method would be to find past articles regarding the same subject. I could also look into how this language has begun seeping into more formal settings such as many newly published books. It could be interesting to look at how language has devolved since the social media craze began, but for now the main focus of this topic would be why people seem to lose their ability to write when on a social media platform.

Would we be able to center our topics/research around books? For example if I wanted to write about the evolution of writing over time from one individual could I use two or more of their books (along with other articles) to base my research off of or would it be best if we stuck to topics more like the one we read about with restaurant literacy?

How Authors Have Communicated With Readers in the Past Versus Now

I see a lot of marketing for books on social media nowadays from authors as a means of selling their stories, however in the past this would not have been possible. I think many authors used the newspapers to get word out in the past but it would be interesting to look at the kind of language they used. Did they answer questions? Did they share excerpts from their books? How did they communicate with their readers?

For this topic I don’t think interviews would be very effective so I would mainly stick to other articles or sources and look at the words used by authors in the past and compare it to authors in the present. I could also potentially look at the effectiveness of the different approaches, as well as their similarities.

How Politicians Communicate with Voters

For this topic I would be looking at how politicians use words to encourage people to vote for them or their policies. I would look at political debates (I could also look at past politicians versus current because their oratory skills have definitely declined in the last few years). I could also look at the words in bills that are being passed/have been passed.

There have been many instances of words losing their meaning overtime, changing meaning, and concepts that previously did not have words to describe them (such as the color blue and the phrase “wine-dark sea”). I think it could be interesting to look at how language has evolved over time into what we now use in our everyday lives.

Kids Television Shows

The writing for children’s shows has drastically changed from the time I as a child to now. This has been increasingly obvious to me since I have a younger brother who is four years old. The shows I watched when I was young were mostly informational (think PBS kids, Wild Kratts, etc.), whereas the shows now are things such as Cocomelon, or PinkFong. The writing for these shows is definitely a step below those that played as I was growing up. I would look into why this has happened. I would read articles, scripts, as well as look into the studios in which these shows were produced in order to understand why this has happened.

Since I usually did not have the time nor the patience for a works cited page I would just stick my sources into a citation generator. None of my past teachers really bothered with the works cited page unless it was outrageously incorrect so I never really spent the time to learn how to correctly format citations.

I was pretty decent at in-text citations but there were a few things that I would struggle with in the past. I was never sure exactly how much information was needed for the in-text citations, especially since we used so many different kinds of sources in my previous classes.

At my high school, teachers always put an imphasis on works cited pages as well as the in-text citations, however they never really taught us how to do them. They would just sort of throw information at us and we were e pelted to figure it out from there. So with the citations I never knew if I needed the title of the source, the year, page number, or author. I would usually just stick the name of the source and the page number in the citation and call it good. Again no one ever really checked so I never learned.

The more assignments I do where we include a works cited/references list the better I will get at them. However, practice for the sake of practice rather than an actual assignment tends to not stick in my brain as well. It also melts my brain quicker than if I needed to do it for an assignment.

Since I work best under pressure, I tend not to get any work done unless it is closer to the deadline (or if I am avoiding working on something else) so doing citation work just for practice usually makes me forget things/makes it more likely for me to make stupid mistakes that I otherwise would not have made.

APA formatting makes more since to me but since I do not have any background in it, I still struggle with the requirements and formatting. MLA I have gotten more used to but still do not fully understand. I think I prefer APA but still need to practice a bit more before I can say I am fully comfortable.

The poster board wasn’t too difficult to make, but it did take a few tries to get it right. The process consisted of mostly copying excerpts from my final paper and pasting them onto the PowerPoint. I also pasted various images from both the discourse analysis as well as my survey.

Literature Review Reflection

The literature was probably the most difficult project for me. It was not a difficult project in and of itself but since I had never done one I wasn’t sure where to start with it. I had gone to the writing center previously but that was mainly for formatting. I turned it in and received an incomplete at first but they were easy fixes. Once I resubmitted it it was marked as complete but I still wasn’t happy with it. I wound up rewriting it multiple times in order to get it to how it is on the final paper.
