In recent years, technology use in the classroom has changed. Teachers are no longer limited to using it for the sole purpose of planning lessons. It has expanded beyond what some could even imagine. Teachers now use technology to engage students and to enhance the learning experience by using technology integrated activities. However, technology use within the classroom is not without its challenges. As a technology leader, I need to be able to support administration, teachers, and students when these challenges occur. This presentation will cover topics pertaining to some of technology best practices, examples of technology integrated activities, interviews from tech coordinators, and a short reflection.

The vision for any career is important and that is no different in education. Based on the response from my school-based technology facilitator’s interview question, the school and district share their goal. I would have thought that each school would have had to come up with its own technology goal that coincides with the district's vision. However, the district leader did state her own personal vision. She did not quote some written response. Her answer came from the heart and was more realistic.

Leader:
2.2.a Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders.

Collaboration is not just something teachers have their students do within their classrooms. Collaboration takes place in any job and at any position. The district tech coordinator’s response about working with external partners was a great answer. Building a good relationship with anyone is key for anything to be successful. This question also coincides with the question about budget and professional development. When our district buys products, professional development is usually included or is part of the contract. When using certain products constantly, we are able to build a good relationship with them and know they will be there if we need them.

Collaborate:
2.4.a Dedicate planning time to collaborate with colleagues to create authentic learning experiences that leverage technology.

One of my major concerns involving technology is student misuse. This was a question posed to my school-based tech facilitator. I was disappointed in the response. I completely agree that if a device gets damaged, a parent should be required to pay for the device. However, how does suspending a student solve a misuse problem? Students are at home probably playing games, watching tv, or sleeping. They are definitely not learning anything. Also, having the teacher provide assignments in paper and pencil just makes more work for the teacher and still does not teach the student appropriate technology usage. The response that bother me the most was having the student use a desktop in place of their Chromebook. Most of the misuse in my classroom is students getting on games that are not school appropriate. They would be able to still access these games whether it was a desktop or a laptop. Also, most classrooms do not even have a desktop available anymore, mine included. So, how would that be a consequence? Computer misuse is a concern that is harder to address. Based on the misuse within my classroom, a solution would be finding a way to block sites that are not school-appropriate immediately when students access them. This now leads to the interview question about digital citizenship. While digital citizenship is taught in the computer lab at my school, it is not a topic I feel is addressed with all stakeholders in mind. This is a major concern I have. Digital Citizenship is a topic everyone needs to know. There are some teachers that are put into the classroom without any knowledge of what digital citizenship entails in order to enforce it within their classroom. As a tech leader, I would plan to not just teach the students but work with administrations to arrange some form of professional development for teachers. I also think linking digital citizenship videos and activities to students’ Google Classroom would be a great way to get the parents involved.

Citizen:
2.3.c Mentor students in safe, legal and ethical practices with digital tools and the protection of intellectual rights and property.
