We Real Cool Summary And Analysis

Gwendolyn Brooks wrote “We Real Cool” as a way to show that you are the only one that can control where you get in life, and your success is a direct reflection of your actions. In the story, teenagers are hanging around outside of a pool, ignoring any rules or reinforcements that they may know about. They tend to fool around, break rules, and do bad things to try to seem cool or funny. However, these actions quickly catch up to them and affect where they get in life. In The American Dream, you work hard to achieve your goals, and will do whatever it takes to achieve your goals. How hard you work, is how far you will get. “We Real Cool” shows similarities to The American Dream because it shows that your actions will take you where you deserve.

ENGLISH READING CIRCLE ON POETRY AND PROSE POETRY – POEM OF THE MONTH ANALYSIS: “A SUNSET OF THE CITY” BY GWENDOLYN BROOKS

This source supports my thesis because it talks about a woman who is growing old, and looking back on her life to see how far she has come. She says she can look at her kids all grown up, and well behaved, and how proud of herself she is that she rose those kids. This relates back to The American Dream because a common theme of Brooks’ poems, highlights being a black woman overcoming hard times, this peice shows that no matter who you are, you are capable of creating a life that you will be proud and comfortable in.

Gwendolyn Brooks Poem Analysis

Gwendolyn Brooks wrote poems about how a lot of people in this time have desires for things such as money, fame, and power, however they will have to work hard the old fashioned way to actually gain these things. Gwendolyn Brooks piece “The Explorer” talks about the wants, needs, and desires of all humans. Growing up in a time where being African American meant inequality, if you were Black you would have to work twice as hard just to prove you are wanting to be taken seriously in your business. This all comes back to the American Dream because achieving your dreams in America should be about working as hard as you possibly can, and not stopping until you are proud of yourself. Her story “The Explorers” supports this idea because the characters have desires and wants for material items, but quickly realize they aren’t going to get anything handed to them.
