S is a 6 year old kindergartner who is almost 7. She started school late. She is one of six children. Her mother is concerned with her inability to do many things academically. She also struggles with communication.

She has already shown improvement with her writing skills. From writing just circles for her name to actually writing letters now. She seems eager to please and smiles often. She also gets confused easily, but doesn't necessarily know how to ask for help. She does well with routines and is friendly with other children. She follows directions and keeps her things organized. She learns best when she can see pictures or examples. She is still working on feeling confident doing tasks step-by-step and needs help expressing herself because she often uses short phrases. She is also building her fine motor skills. She knows many sounds, but she is still learning to match them to letters, and her phonemic awareness is developing.

The entire room environment provides ways to increase language and literacy development. The children have access to writing materials such as pencils, markers, and crayons. There is an area with a bookshelf filled with books ranging in ability. Sight words are hung in an area in the room. A dramatic play area for communicating. When most people think of literacy development they think of reading itself. The teacher has stations that the children attend each day.

In literacy stations students are able to explore through reading, writing and hands on stations. Students rotate through the centers every 10 minutes. They do things like draw about the characters in the book, draw the setting, or their favorite part in the book. The students are able to become detectives and look for specific letters helping them work on their alphabet knowledge. There are pointers provided to help the students point to their words as they learn to read. A listening station is also provided where they can listen to songs and stories through headphones.
