A study was made in Birmingham, Alabama that shows a line that divides the low income areas of the city into segregated neighborhoods. This is one of the reasons the problem of being unsupportive of biracial relationships starts since society is now trained to think that those who aren't their skin color should not be able to socialize with them. They are taught to feel hatred toward the "lower income people" and that should not be happening this far into the 21st century.

The affects on white people because of interracial marriage included increased job insecurity, social and familial rejection, and less legal protection including the loss of death benefits. Most parents felt like they had to disown their children if they were in a interracial marriage in order to save their status and family preservation. In some cases, parents went so far as to hire lawyers and declare their daughters insane. Some sought mental health professionals for their daughters.

Black people's take on interracial segregation

The opinions of black people about interracial marriage were ignored up until the 1970's because people believed on white people felt strongly about it. For black people it wasn't so much about social status or being discriminated against because they already had that in their lives. It was the fact that black people viewed white people as "oppressors and persecutors". They didn't like the idea of interracial marriage because they didn't think white people could view them as equals and overcome racial stereotypes. Many black people also thought of interracial marriage as a way to try and escape being black. They thought of it as social passing. They saw interracial marriage as a lack of pride in black identity. Black people also said that black man and white woman marriages defined white women as more beautiful than black women, and that also meant that a black woman would be husband-less somewhere.
