Manila was ranked one of the lowest cities in the 2018 Sustainable Cities Index of Arcadis Design and Consultancy for Natural and Built Assets. The study is based off of three main points: Quality of life (People), environmental health (Planet), and economic stability (Profit) (Arcadis, 2018). The extremely low rank that Manila is on the study helps illustrate how the people of Manila face many hardships such as a deteriorating environment and dilapidated slums and shanty towns to house the extreme overpopulation. There are a multitude of reasons why Manila lacks environmental sustainability, including its overpopulation, traffic congestion, and pollution (Edelman, 2016). However, making changes to urban infrastructure provides solutions to Manila's lack of Environmental sustainability, ultimately affecting the next generation.

-Road traffic makes up 98% of passenger traffic, which is harmful to the environment due to pollution.

-Similarly to the first source, this source believes that a solution to traffic congestion is to encourage biking and other sustainable ways of transportation. Also, the creation of non-motorized roads only for bikes would encourage the use of bikes as it would allow for more usefulness.

-However, this source also contends the use of public transportation, like jeepneys, which have high cultural significance and can be used as a way to reduce the number of cars on the street, reducing traffic, and in turn, reducing pollution. This ultimately allows for better environmental sustainability.

Climate change causes harm to many aspects of an urban environment like energy, water, and food through rising temperatures, flooding, food insecurity.

-Climate change disproportionately affects the poor as they already have limited access to food security -> it is important to create resilient food systems which can withstand adversity from climate and change and other problems.

-These resilient food systems could implement environmental sustainability, like the reduction of fertilizer use, better water infiltration, decreasing urban heat island effect, and enabling the reuse of organic wastes which limits methane production.
