I think that he wrote this story because he wanted to show that how not knowing what the woman would have done changed the way he would later on help strangers and the people around him. He wanted to also show people that no matter the outcome, you should try to help people that are under stress and are having problems throughout their day. In my opinion he named the essay "Little Things are Big" because the story was about how he saw a mother with little kids and a suitcase and he was debating whether or not he should help. But at the end those little kids had an everlasting effect on him and how he decided that he would help people in the future, no matter what they look like or how the react.

Jesus's dilemma was if he should or shouldn't help a woman in the 1950's. She was struggling with a baby in one arm, a suitcase in the other, and two young children. He was thinking about if the lady would even accept his help. He is half Black and half Puerto Rican so he was unsure how she would react.

The dilemma was whether he should've helped the white lady and her children or not. One of the obvious factors was race, and how a white lady would react to a half black, half Puerto Rican man. Another was time of day, and even gender, as well as the area of the country they're in.

He had to choose between showing courtesy, or to simply walk away. Their was a difference in race, gender, and it was the middle of night, in New York. There was a good chance she wouldn't have accepted his help.

The dilemma was that he ha a choice. Whether to help the lady or choose to walk away. Race was a big problem, especially in the 1950s. So for a half-puerto rican to help a white woman, it seemed that she wouldn't have the same reaction for as if he was a white person helping.

His dilemma on the train was that he saw a woman with 2 kids and a big suitcase, and she was clearly struggling to watch her kids and have the big suitcase while getting onto the train. He was going to ask to help, but he realized that as a poc man that she might not feel as safe if he were to come up to her and offer help, so he didn't help and that was upsetting to him too.

His pride in his politeness and courtesy was at stake, as well as his safety, because it was the 1950´s. He felt bad, because he did not know if she would actually react badly towards him, and he did not give her a chance.

I think that Colon's whole entire life was at risk in this situation. He could have risked his freedom from a simple situation of him just trying to help if the situation were to have escalated. Race was a problem back in that time and he was an African man attempting to help a white women, she could have been scared and made it into a big deal and ruined his life. Colon felt horrible after he had not helped the women though, and promised himself if he were to be in that situation again, he would never hesitate to ask.

I think he wrote this story to showcase that in our world race and gender can lead to many different misinterpretations. Him being a half African American and half Puerto Rican male may have lead the lady to denying his help. I think he titled it "Little Things Are Big" because this was just a simple little moment in his life but it made an impact for the rest of his life. He said next time he is in this situation he is always going to offer his help no matter the outcome.

He wrote this story so not many other people would make the same mistake he feels like he made. It would've been morally better to help the woman out. He titled it this because the little things in his mind were the prejudices he was worried about and the outcome was the big thing.
