         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Species:</em></strong><em>  </em>a group of  organisms with similar characteristics, which can  potentially interbreed and produce fertile offspring.<br><strong><em>Population:</em></strong> a group of organisms of the same species, who live in the same area at the same time.<br><strong><em>Autotrophs:</em></strong> absorb carbon dioxide, water, and inorganic nutrients such as nitrates from the <em>abiotic</em> (non-living) environment and use them to synthesize all the carbon compounds that they need; light is used as an external energy source.<br><strong><em>Heterotrophs:</em></strong> cannot make carbon compounds that they need and instead obtain them from other organisms.<br><strong><em>Mixotrophic: </em></strong>can survive either making their own nutrients or obtaining it from others.<br><strong><em>Saprotrophs:</em></strong> obtain organic nutrients from dead organisms by external digestion. <br><strong><em>Consumers:</em></strong> feed on living organisms by ingestion. <br><strong><em>Detritivores:</em></strong> obtain organic nutrients from<em> detritus</em> (dead material from living things) by internal digestion.<br><strong><em>Relationships:</em></strong> both benefits OR one benefits the other has no gain or loss OR one benefits while one is harmed. <br><strong><em>Community:</em></strong> a group of populations of different species living together and interacting with each other in an area.<br><strong><em>Ecosystem:</em></strong> a community formed by its interactions with the abiotic environment.<br><strong><em>Food web:</em></strong> complex network of feeding relationships in a community.<br><strong><em>Mesocosm:</em></strong> a small experimental environment area set up in an ecological research programme.<br><strong><em>Quadrat:</em></strong> a square sample area used in ecological research.<br><strong><em>Quadrat Sampling</em></strong>: repeatedly placing a Quadrat frame, random positions in habitat and recording the number of organisms.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Two main modes of nutrition: <em>Autotrophs</em> and <em>Heterotrophs</em>.<br>- Heterotrophs eat Autotrophs in order to get the nutrients that they can't produce themselves.&nbsp;<br>- Majority of plants are Autotrophs; only 1% are Heterotrophic.&nbsp;<br>- Any species getting their supply of carbon compounds from any other species is known as a Heterotrophs, regardless of the species. "We cannot assume that a plant or alga is autotrophic- not all are."</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- Populations live together in order to survive.<br>- The interaction between populations is important for harmony and trophic nutrition (sad, but that's how the world works).<br>- Ecosystems allow population to interact with their abiotic surroundings. <br>- The relationships between<em> biotic</em> (living) and abiotic environments are vital for chemical and nutrient recycling in the Ecosystem - which have the potential to be around for a long time, as long as the nutrients keep recycling, have a constant supply of energy - the continue as long as they can. </div>]]></description>
