The theme of Purple Hibiscus is violence in families and not having a voice. Kambili and her brother live their lives in fear of being punished for making mistakes leading them to be mute. Their father punishes them and their mother both physically and emotionally. Their father believes that beating them will make them better and fix their mistakes when it has the opposite affect. They are not encouraged to mature or acheive in life but punished when they do not succeed.
