Election

On November 6th 1860, Republican Abraham Lincoln gets elected as the president of the United States of America and takes office in Washington DC. This marked the first time America had a Republican President. Abe would be a leader and set in motion many important events throughout the Civil war.

Secession Convention

On December 17th 1860, Representatives from the soon to be seceded states met in Columbia South Carolina. The Secession Convention was a large meeting that ultimately led to the future rebel states to leave the Union. The rebels debated about the institution of slavery and resentment grew toward the Northern states and their ideals.

Confederate States of America

On February 4th 1861, the seceded southern states formed the Confederate States of America at a conference in Montgomery, Alabama. The states formed a new Union with a new Constitution and all. This split the gap between North and South dramatically, and worsened relations of the states.

Attack on Ft. Sumter

April 12th 1861, the local South Carolina militia attacked Fort Sumter, an island fort off the coast of the state. The fort was there since the British built it in the war of 1812. The confederates took the fort and kicked off the civil war, and handed the US army its first loss.

First Skirmish

On June 3rd 1861, federal and confederate forces skirmished for the first time in Philippi, West Virginia. This marked the first battle in the East and started the Eastern front of the Civil war.

Bull Run

On July 21st 1861, General McDowell and the US army faced off against the Confederates in the First battle of Bull Run. The battle took place near Manassas, Virginia. The Union started winning but when rebel reinforcements came, the Union was dealt a hefty defeat. This was one of the first major battles, and showed that the War might not be a quick, month long conflict.

Wilson's Creek

On August 10th 1861, Nathaniel Lyon led the federals and attacked the rebels at Wilson's Creek Missouri. Initially, the federal forces were winning, but Lyon was killed and things turned sour. The battle showed the Confederate strength in the west of the Mississippi.

Battle of 7 Pines

During the battle of 7 Pines from May 31st-June 1st 1861, Commander Joseph Johnston is wounded just outside of Richmond, Virginia. This put a man named Robert E Lee in command. Lee would be arguably the most famous commander in the war, leading his "Army of Northern Virginia" up until the end of the war.

Emancipation Proclamation

On January 1st 1863, Lincoln and the United States Government declared the Emancipation Proclamation from Washington DC. EP turned the tide of the war, bringing new reasons for the North to fight, along with allowing Black fighters to participate. The main effect of EP was that it declared all enslaved people free. The new goal of the Federals was to unite the country, and bring it to a better state then it was before enslavement was abolished.

Surrender

On April 1865, Robert E Lee and Ulysses S Grant met at Appomattox Court house to discuss surrender agreements. Lee had attacked in the early hours of the morning and failed, and later met Grant at the Virginia court house. The deal marked the end of the assault toward DC, and closed a major part of the Confederate army. Soon almost every other general had surrendered, marked the end of the war.
