Yanek and his family live in Krakow Poland in just a blink of an eye their city was invaded by the Germans beginning WWII, for now, Yanek and his family remain in Krakow for a little while they stay in their flat with several other families, anti-Semitic rules have neem put in place that persecute Jewish people taking away any rights they had over time walls are built up around the ghetto to contain the remaining Jews who have not been taken for resettlement or deportation yet one by on many Jews were relocated to other Jewish ghettos work camps concentration camps or were killed on site. With the stress of no food and constant hiding Yanik is living in fair being caught by the Nazis His emotional state is one of constant terror and panic at what awaits him at every turn the unknown aspects of war leave a feeling of being unsettled Yanik's life as a 10-year-old boy before the war was very normal he attended school played with friends and went to Synagogue with his family he loves his mom and dad and look up them but as the work continues Yannick begins to doubt his father's constant hopefulness and positivity and wonders who is really right his father or uncle Moshi doubting your parents for the first time is a struggle for Yannick especially in war-torn Poland.

Yanek met an older gentleman whom he recognized, he couldn't figure out who he was until he found his place. He was the Judenrott who was going around and telling the Nazis where everyone and everything was. Yanek was going down the elevator to the salt mines underground. he started panicking and his mind went to when he and 2 Jews were under the floorboards, he felt like he was in a coffin. When they finally arrived at the mines yanek thought about how beautiful it looked down there with the chandeliers carved out of salt the glistening of the salt, and just how lovely it looked.

Yanek was getting very frustrated because the guards were messing with them to see if anyone would act out. He waited and waited to see if anyone else had the same thought that if they all acted together then they could take the guards. One person did try to take them he was getting beaten by a guard and he took the bat and started beating the guard with it. He was shot. He realized that there may be many more Jews than guards but one bullet could stop them all.

Yanek was put into a cattle car sort of thing and they were crammed in so tight that someone died and was still standing up from the number of people, luckily Yanek was near an air vent and he was able to get cold air and water from the snow. The ride was about 2-3 days and once they arrived they were still in the car for about another day. When they were finally let out people were dropping because they had died in the vehicle so once the pressure was released they dropped. They got there and thought they were being put into gas chambers but they were showers, they were being bathed it was a miracle.

But when he watched the nazis kill a deer he got filled with rage. They were treating the animals better than they were treating the jews,so when he saw them beating the deer he got really upset.
