My name is Samantha Madariaga.

My favorite Latin American piece of fashion is the Virgen Mary Poncho, which is essentially a wool material "sweater" which keeps you warm in the cold nights. However, this poncho is used to represent our love for the virgin Mary when it comes to celebrate her birthday on December 12th. I come from a catholic region which is why I value the Virgin Mary and try to embrace my religion.

Two things I want to learn during the semester are (1) fashion in other Latin America countries and (2) cultures of other Latin America countries how it has evolved through the course of time and how the culture is still kept within the country.

Hi, my name is Stephanie. My favorite Latin American piece of fashion are these pretty Sinaloa dresses. These dresses come in different colors and flower patterns with lace, ruffles, and ribbons. Also, these dresses are used during Folkloric dances, which are dances danced in church festivals honoring the Virgin Mary and Mexico's Independence Day. I chose these dresses because when I was a child I had the opportunity to dance Ballet Folkloricos and wear and dance in these beautiful dresses. It was an enjoyable way to represent my culture.

This dress typically goes by the name "vestido Indita" and is commonly worn by children on the 12th of December in Mexico on the celebration of the Virgin Mary's birthday. I chose this piece of clothing because, like other traditional clothing in Mexico, it represents the rich culture and identity of the country as well as its traditions, I love the vibrant colors that are used in this clothing piece and the time that goes into elaborating this dress. Hey, my name is Daniela Orquera. My favorite Latin American piece of fashion is the Panama Hat, they are hats made of toquilla straw, their origin is from the Ecuadorian coast, therefore they are part of most of the typical Ecuadorian costumes, and their use and way of moving it in dances or greetings have different meanings. Many times, their name confuses everybody because they are called Panama hats. I chose this piece because I´m Ecuadorian and have seen how hats are made; I have used them in events for presentations of typical folkloric dances and because also in Ecuador wearing a Panama Hat with daily clothes is synonymous of STYLE.

Hi, my name is Lizaida Portillo. My favorite Latin American fashion icon is Angela Aguilar. She comes from a very well-known Mexican family because of their music. She stands out in her family because of the outfits she wears. To my liking, they are very extra and beautiful. She always goes out when it comes to her outfits as you can tell in this image. The dresses are very screaming "I am proud to be Mexican." I'm not Mexican but I love their culture. I find fashion as a great way to express our culture and our roots.

Hey, my name is Ricardo Medina. My favorite piece of Latin American Fashion is the traditional mariachi outfit. A charro or outfit or suit is a style of dress originating in Mexico and based on the clothing of a type of horseman, the charro. Part of the reason why I chose this outfit was due to how iconic it is. You don't need to know much about Mexican culture to know what a mariachi is. Some things I hope to learn is how fashion was influenced due to colonization and what cultural value some garments are given by it's people.

Hi, my name is Crystal Sanchez. One of my favorite Latin American pieces of fashion is the rebozo, in Mexico or at least where i am from they are used either as an accessory or it has the purpose to help women carry their child. There are diverse types of rebozos such as ones that are embroidered by hand and those are usually the ones that are used as accessories. The reason I love this rebozo is because there are different versions of this. My mom owns a rebozo that she used to carry me and my younger siblings when we were babies. What I hope to learn from this class is different fashion styles in different Latin countries and not just from my native country, as well as learning how certain trends are adapted into a new version either for the better or for the worse.

Hi, I'm Feny Wu Li. My top Latin American fashion icon is Carolina Herrera. She's a famous Venezuelan-American designer famous for her classic elegance and stylish looks. I really like the traditional Venezuelan skirt with its pretty ruffles and wide hem. It makes me think of parties and celebrations because it was a sign of happiness when someone wore it for special events when I was growing up.

I picked these because they show how tradition and elegance come together in both modern fashion and cultural traditions.

Kahlo's style and unapologetic expression of both physical and emotional suffering have made her an iconic figure in art and feminism.
