Steinbeck presents Lennie as a bear throughout chapter 1, referring to his “big paw” and that he “walks heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws”. Building on this, the quote “I’ll go up in the hills and find a cave” gives the impression that Lennie would rather be in nature than in the city/urban areas. This refers back to Steinbeck wanting Lennie to be thought of as an animal and animalising Lennie because he chooses for Lennie to go to “the hills” and “a cave”. He implies to the reader that Lennie is animal like and he wants the reader to pick up on Lennie’s animalistic features so by saying Lennie will go to “the hills” and a “cave” he is choosing locations which are normally associated with animals not humans. This can also be interpreted as Steinbeck sending a message to the reader that Lennie is unique from other humans as he separates himself from humanity. We can infer from this that Lennie may not feel comfortable around humans and may be an introvert who prefers his own or animals company. Steinbeck could be trying to signify that Lennie is an outcast of society who doesn’t fit in or belong with other humans.
