Without the CPU a computer would not work. 

This is how the CPU would perform a task

1.When you click on a program or application the storage which contains the program will transfer the data to the RAM (A program is a set of instructions for the CPU)

2. The CPU uses a memory controller to transfer the data from the RAM to the CPU

3.The CPU processes the data and converts in to information

4.Now depending on what the program is tasked to do could depend on what happens. Things like Floppy disks contained 1.2 MB of data and were typically very slow.

Then we have flash storage which consists of USB, SD and SSD's which have very fast read and write speeds and can contain a lot of data. They have no moving parts and they typically cost a lot depending on the amount of storage you want, also if there is a data loss it has difficulty recovering the data.

There is also magnetic storage which usually consists of hard drives or HDD and they have a needle that detects grooves in the disk, and the needle detects for electrical charges which tell it the information, these are typically quite slow however they contain a lot of storage and they are typically quite cheap and if data is lost it is much easier to recover the data.
