Law of Effect: I used a behavior strategy called "seat check" with my elementary students. Often times students call out or get out of their seats. On a picture of "seat check" there is a visual with my expectation. It is their speech peer's sitting and ready to work. I randomly call out "seat check." When students earn several points for seat check their picture can go on my my wall. They can become a peer model and a speech celebrity.

I use the idea of Law of Readiness when I teach writing in my English class. I can take one skill of writing, say citing evidence to support students' answers, and break that down into easier parts. So in the beginning of the lesson, we might just find one piece of evidence. Then the next time we practice, I expect students to find 2 pieces of evidence. The next time we practice the skills, we will work on using sophisticated transition words to tie both pieces of evidence together and so on.

Law of Effect: We are a PBIS school so we are constantly rewarding expected behaviors that have been shared and practiced with the kids. As they acquire points, they can "buy" items or experiences as rewards. This is an example of Law of Effect. I am still working on this whole idea as the reinforcing words do continuously come out of my mouth to the students, both individual and whole class, but I am not great at connecting it to the points. For example: "Wow, thank you for helping her pick up her pencil box. I am adding a point for Kindness." I just say that it's so nice to see you helping a friend. I'm still of the belief that I want it to be intrinsic. And, it takes time to add all those points on the spot. I know it's only first grade. Something I'm still working on ; )

The Law of Readiness quickly comes to mind when I think about teaching my students how to write using MLA formatting guidelines. This is a new skill for my seventh-graders, so I start by providing them with a template that has the font, size, and spacing already set up for them. They simply have to type in the corresponding information into the header and heading. Once familiarity sets in with this format, we then begin with a blank Google Doc and practice setting up our header and heading in the proper font, size, and spacing. As the students become more familiar with this, we build on our understanding of MLA formatting by creating Works Cited pages. Students begin with simply one source, and then we build into two, three, then four sources. We always finish out with in-text citations as those tend to be the most challenging concept for students. I guide the students through examples of in-text citations showing them how they are set up and where they are placed in correspondence to our source information. By the end of the school year, the students have learned and can apply all the necessary skills for MLA formatting.

I use the Law of Effect often. I also use ClassDojo in my room. Just the sound of earning points can be enough to get most kids on track. I teach my students that they get to make their own choices. I can't tell them what to do but with this I teach them that their choices affect my choices. They quickly learn what that means- their choices have an affect on who I pick for certain things. Even little things like who I will pick to run something to another classroom. They know I only pick students who I can trust and I pick who I can trust based on their choices.

At my school we use the law of effect throughout the year. We use a School wide Positive Behavior Support Plan in which students earn "paws" from staff throughout the year. These paws have points on them and they can go shopping at the paw store once a month. This correlates with their School wide behavior chart. Any student with 7 or less marks throughout the trimester receives an end of the trimester rewards such as movie, pj day, etc. The student are held accountable for their own actions and work hard to recieve these paws. They even can earn class paws. It teaches them to do right from wrong and always be respectful of your school and those around you. As the year goes on, the students really do get excited and show effort into working hard to get as many as they can.

We use the Law of Effect often at my school. We use ClassDojo schoolwide, and the students earn points for certain behaviors in the classroom. We then use those points each quarter for a reward, and the student's reward is based on the amount of points that they received that quarter. The more points that the student has the more that they will get to participate in the reward. This helps students take responsibility for their own behavior, and it gives them something to work towards each marking period. The points then reset so that everyone has a fresh start each quarter.

My class uses the Law of Effect since we are a PBIS school. Like many others have said we also use Class DoJo points to reinforce behavior, but we also hand out white tickets. Our white tickets are very similar to DoJo points but they are tangible items that students count and see. At the end of each month, students add up their points and tickets to pick out a prize from our PBIS store . Students can also save their tickets for monthly events, such as pumpkin decorating, popcorn and a movie, and the end of the year carnival just to name a few.

Working with kindergarten students I constantly use the Law of Effect to reinforce desired behaviors. Our school uses Class Dojo and tickets as a school-wide program. Once the students earn enough tickets, they are able to choose a prize from our school store or go to an end of month activity such as pumpkin painting or BINGO. I also allow my students to earn desk pets for being respectful, helpful, or just going above and beyond by being a fantastic student and learner in our classroom.

I use the Law of Effect in my classroom and school. I work at the same school Samantha B and Jessica S work in and we are a PBIS school. I am currently on the SWBPIS Committee and we are constantly trying to find ways and strategies to motivate students and to help them be successful in their behaviors. I have been using Dojo in my classroom since I started teaching 7 years ago. I love this program and I love how much it has changed over the years. It's a great resource for feedback and family communication. Our school's white ticket system is great, however; my 5th graders this year, were not too invested in earning rewards and activities. They wanted what they wanted right then and there and didn't care about consequences, positive or negative. That was our struggle this year :/
