The Leviathan whale was a sea "monster" that lived during the Serravallian stage of the Miocene epoch, about 12 to 13 million years ago. It lived in the ocean, but scientist are still not sure exactly where. Scientist assume that the creature inhabited the sea's around Australia, because of fossils found there.

The fossils from the Leviathan Whale, where found in Pisco-Ica desert, in Peru. This tells us that the climate millions of years ago, was very wet. Over time the water dried up and became a desert, leaving us the fossils of creatures that died.

Scientists use fossils to gather information about the lives and evolutionary relationships of organisms, for understanding geological change and even for locating fossil fuel reserves. Fossil remains can give us insight into how prehistoric plants and animals obtained food, reproduced and even how they behaved. At times fossils can also provide evidence for how or why the fossil organism died.
