I find your proposal encourages us to respond to a very real problem by encouraging decisions be made by parents in a context with support for good decision-making. We constantly say that parents are the primary educators of our students. So, it seems then that we should empower parents to make decisions about the course students would delay if they enter into the AMP program -- science, language, or PE / ethnic studies.

I am most impressed by the students in AMP who have an attraction to science but could not take the course.

I'm honestly not sure what to say. The problem seems really clear from a CRT perspective, but it feels like our school doesn't really get what Culturally Responsive Teaching is. It has felt very much like a buzzword that many people use but don't really understand or have a background in. To me, this issue is indicative of larger problems in the school. I know this just for the proposal tomorrow, but it makes it really clear.

As a person who experienced a version of this program in my youth, I feel very deeply the messages that kids receive. Being told that I needed "extra study skills" essentially because I came from a bad school, which translates as being "underrepresented", made an impression on me I'll never forget. The message I got was that "Without ever meeting you, we've decided that you and where you come from aren't good enough." It played directly into my fears and feelings about stereotypes and I didn't take or engage in any high level STEM classes at that institution. I felt like an unwelcome, unqualified outsider; and that feeling never really went away.
