Tally: She was sent by Doctor Cable to find the Smoke based on Shay's enigma. After wandering in the wild for a couple days and eating a whole lot of spagbols, Tally finally hitched a ride with the rangers. Throughout this dangerous journey, Tally faced many threatening obstacles. But with her hoverboard acting as a guardian angel, she managed to stay safe all the way through this perilous and lonely venture. This adventure shows us that even after living in an extremely protective society, Tally can still prove herself to be quite resourceful, calm and focused when she faces danger. As time passes by in the Smoke, she slowly realizes that her old values were superficial and selfish. Mathis G-R

Shay: After having waited for Tally for what seemed like an eternity, Shay was relieved to see her friend show up on the orchid free mountain. But something was off, Tally slowly started talking to David more and more, to a point, where he neglected their old friendship. Jealousy began sprouting in her, every time they spent time together, or that David gave a present to Tally, it grew stronger. Along with her jealousy, some of her traits started merging into those of an anti-hero. Her happy and optimistic personality wasn't enough to stop her from hating Tally for everything she now stands for. -Dylan

Smoke: We could describe the Smoke as a rudimentary, dusty, self-sufficient city that reminds us of a 'rusty' city. In the Smoke, some could arguee that life is a lot harder than in PrettyTown. It might be harder but with those hardships, comes freedom and liberty. People are free to do what they want to do, to be what they want to be and to venture where they want to. There is no governement official that is going to force you to spend your life partying trapped in PrettyTown. It is a beacon of hope and freedom for those who want to find a way out. It also shows its inhabitants that the ways of the old, the rusties, can still work.

Mathis G-R

When Tally first encounters these ferocious flowers, she can't help but feel at peace near such beautiful beings. But she soon realizes that they're threatening the ecosystem, if not the whole continent! Suddenly the thought of such a gorgeous and innocent flower being incinerated in mass quantities doesn't sound as bad as it initially sounded. The flowers let Tally know about a major flaw the Rusties had, they were ready to do ANYTHING for a greater profit. Taking huge risks that placed the population and the earth itself, in a dangerous and unhealthy state were seen as brave and good for humanity. This shows us that humanity's biggest and most dangerous flaw is greediness. -Dylan

In a way, the hoverboard represents Tally's guardian angel. It was always with her when she was travelling to the smoke and it always kept her safe from her journey's danger, no matter how dire the circumstances where. It was her ticket to freedom, and ironnicaly enough, it came from the very place and people that wanted to strip her away from her liberties. Also, it is a technological marvel that shows us how advanced PrettyTown really is. Within the Smoke, the hoverboards are still extremely useful. They can transport people and materials anywhere they want to go. These remnants of PrettyTown acts as the lifeblood of the Smoke. The Smokes inhabitants will never truly get rid of all the things that could remind them of their past life.
Mathis G-R

Important Passages

A passage, in particular, shaped the way Tally saw the outside world, she was aware of the existence of vast lands that she hadn't seen before. But never, had she interacted with somebody that wasn't born in her town, this changed when the Rangers came in and rescued her. They were pretties but acted like uglies, which certainly threw her out of her comfort zone even more. They carried her out of a certain death scenario and opened her eyes to the fact that the rumors claiming that a great number of cities were hidden out there, were actually saying the truth. From that point on, Tally took this whole situation even more seriously, because she now doubted that her actions would cause a greater impact on those she loved and herself than she initially believed. The change was definitely way smaller than the one the Smoke caused, but it was enough to smoothen the drastic transition to a new life in the Smoke.-Dylan

Orchids-Climate Change Connection

Many connections with the book can be made with our present society. I chose one regarding the orchids hostile takeover of earth's ecosystems in the book and the climate change threat that our society is facing. It is explained in the book that a rare and extremely profitable specie of orchids were genetically modified to be more proliferate, thus producing a greater yield and making the owners a heavy profit. This greedy and risky venture turned into a catastrophe when the flower's breeding got out of control. Nowadays, our society keeps producing waste, spending energy carelessly and buying things that we don't need on an enormous scale. Our planet is paying the toll and if we keep on with this pace, we might end up in a similar situation that the rustles were in. The orchid's proliferation caused by mankind's greediness destroyed the book's society and climate change caused by our greediness might very well put an end to our society.
Mathis G-R

Important Passage

At around page 180, we can observe Tally's first encounter with some of the Smoke's inhabitant. This passage is important because it marks the long awaited discovery of the Smoke. The book teased us about a shadowy city that no one knows a lot about for the entirety of its first half and we finnaly get to see it. Also, we will observe Tally as she gets to make many important decisions. Finally, during this passage, one of the ugly said that Tally was carrying a bug. Tally's adventure could've ended up there, but fortunately for Tally, it did not. I really appreciated this tense moment and I believe that this transition between Tally's life in the wild and the beginning of her life in the Smoke really is a important passage.
Denying adulthood-Connection

After reaching the Smoke, Tally realizes that all of its inhabitants are people who used to live in a major city but decided to flee in order to escape the surgery and the responsibilities that come along with it. In their eyes turning pretty is a meaningless title that devours your humility, free will and the ability to have out of the box thoughts and replaces it with a fake sense of pride, superiority and accomplishment. A connection can be made between this way of thinking and how the runaway teens and young adults see our world. One where the main sources of happiness and fulfillment are pointless, boring and repetitive jobs. One where we actively seek recognition from people we never cared about, and all of that, in order to restart the cycle and imprison the minds of those who can think outside the box in a position that they despise. Tally and all those who ran away from their original cities in fear of becoming a gear in somebody else's master plan are in fact, oddly similar to this part of our society that rejects the government and tries to be completely independent. -Dylan
