"Tin Soldiers and Nixon are coming" This part of the song refers to when Students at Kent State University protested against Nixon sending troops to Cambodia and expand the Vietnam war, this anti-war protest was called into the National guard. The National Guard (Tin Soldiers) came to Kent State University to disperse the protest.

"Soldiers are gunning us down"
This quote from the gun refers to the National Guard in attempt to disperse the students fired tear gas into the crowd. The panic and chaos on the campus led to the soldiers firing around 60 rounds in 13 seconds.

"Four Dead in Ohio"
This refers to the four students who were shot and killed in the protest by the National Guard. 9 other students were injured during this protest. This was historically significant because the anti-war protest from students at a college was escalated by the National Guard and unarmed students were shot at and killed by fully armed soldiers.

It was released as a single and had a large impact on the media, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song addresses political issues during the Vietnam war. Because Nixon promised to pull troops out of Vietnam, then once he sent troops to Cambodia and expanded the Vietnam war, people became mad. This Political decision to expand the war in Vietnam was protested by many across the National and this is the story of how one protest turned Violent and students were killed in a protest for what they believed in.

When the protesters showed no sign of quitting and grew increasingly violent, the military was posed with no other option than to use tear gas to try to break up the crowd however this only drew more commotion. The tear gas increased the violence of the crowd causing them to fall back, trapping them on a practice field. When this occurred they had no other option than to take shots into the crowd, injuring 9 killing 4.
