To What Extent Does Modern Day Santa Clarita Resemble 1950's Levittown? by Dana Fedele

Levittown acted as a sanctuary for fearful Americans after the stress of World War II and the overwhelming threat of nuclear warfare presented during the Cold War. The sense of peace and tranquility the suburbs appealed to many white and blue collar working Americans. A vast majority of Americans were unsure about the prospects of our nation and their families. Levittown offered haven to distressed households, away from the fast-paced, noisy, and sometimes perceived "crime ridden" streets of the city. Regions of Santa Clarita act as safe neighborhoods for parents to raise their children away from crime and commotion. Stevenson Ranch employs multiple patrol officers to monitor the streets for suspicious activity or to address any reports of noise. This is a response to homeowner's desire to live in safe and secure neighborhoods, mirroring the worries of prospective homeowners during the 1950's.

The aesthetic appeal of Stevenson Ranch relates very closely to Levittown. Nicely painted houses resided on community streets constructed in a curvilinear fashion in efforts to express an un-urban grid like feel. Landscaping and gardening were taken into extreme consideration, and organizations monitored the upkeep of all properties to ensure a positive appearance. In Santa Clarita, we have Home Owner's Associations to monitor the appearance and maintenance of all residences. One goal of these organizations is to make sure all properties look pleasing to the eye. This is often deemed important for setting peaceful and secure tones in the neighborhood.

Both Levittown and Santa Clarita homes embody a sense of homogeneity. Levittown' houses varied even less than Santa Clarita's, and all projected tranquil and simplistic tones. One possible reason for this lack of diversity could be the rate at which these suburbs were built. Levittown was constructed fairly quickly due to a high demand for houses following the Cold War. Given this need for suburban housing, homes were built as similarly, quickly, and simply as possible. The rushed manner in which Levittown was constructed might have contributed to a lack of variety in housing. After all, the goal of Levittown was to build as many houses as fast as possible. However, it is also likely that residents would prefer all houses to look the same. That is also extremely obvious in Stevenson Ranch where houses come in a handful of hardly different models painted in bland colors. I believe that many homeowners both during the 1950's and in present day society find comfort in the homogeneity of the suburbs.

Levittown suburbs have a large and unpleasant history of racial discrimination and segregation against African Americans. Even after housing segregation was ruled unconstitutional by the courts, Levitt brothers would refuse to sell houses to people of color. When two African Americans purchased a previously owned home in the Levittown suburbs, they faced endless harassment and protest. This is very different from what I see occurring in the Santa Clarita valley. Our suburbs are composed of multiple races, ethnicities, and religions living together in harmony in spite of these minor surface differences. Fortunately, outright prejudice against others even resembling Levittown is not something I have heard of or witnessed in my community. I feel our suburbs in Santa Clarita have a much stronger sense of community and acceptance among their residents that allows us to prosper.

Levittown houses intentionally attracted white and blue collar middle class Americans. To attract their desired market, the Levitt brothers priced their homes affordably with their first models priced at $6,900 with a downpayment of only $100. This is reflective of both the high demand for suburban homes and the post-War housing boom. However, present day Santa Clarita has a fairly poor housing market. After the market crashed in the past decade, Santa Clarita homeowners are losing money from their housing purchase. Certain suburban areas of Santa Clarita such as gated communities and Stevenson Ranch contain homes of a higher price range. This is not ideal for some middle-class working Americans. In terms of the affordability of housing, Levittown was less expensive than homes sold today in the Santa Clarita suburbs.

The wealthy Americans residing in Long Island, NY often stigmatized those moving into the new, affordable suburbs in Levittown. Many Americans from other expensive surrounding areas also held resentful attitudes towards their new neighbors. In Santa Clarita, I do not notice any resentment from people of higher status towards middle class Americans living in suburbs. Actually, it seems that it is more common for suburb residents to be stigmatized as rich or spoiled, much to the contrary of the way Levittown residents were perceived. In general, those living in Santa Clarita are accepting of those from other neighborhoods or suburbs in our city. I haven't met any Santa Clarita residents willing to denounce another resident because of the suburb they reside in.
