The place I grew up: Stop #3

I started volunteering at the Michigan Animal Rescue League as part of a community service project for Girl Scouts when I was 12 and it just kind of stuck. Every other week my dad and I would head out to Pontiac to care for the cats until I was well into high school.

I have really fond memories of taking walks here as a kid. When the pandemic hit and I moved back home, this place became a sort of a peaceful refuge.

The place I grew up: Stop #5

My first taste of college!! I didn't really know what I wanted to study at university until I took an amazing introductory environmental science course here. I loved how in-touch with the natural world it was and the fact that we could learn so much from analysing samples taken right on campus, like in the lake you see in this picture. I remember thinking that I could see myself being fulfilled if I dove into this field - and I am, at least so far. I credit the instructor I had in that class for giving me the confidence to pursue an education in the natural sciences.

The place I grew up: Stop #6

If I were to put a finite placemarker on my transition from youth to adult, it would be this train station. This is where I departed from to go live on my own for the first time. It was scary and exhilerating, but I've always loved travelling by train, so it seemed appropriate to make that leap in a positive location.
