Submitted by: Katelyn Hoetschl

The Six Hats of Thinking enables groups to look at a decision from several points of view. It was created by Edward de Bono in his book Six Thinking Hats and is an important and powerful technique. The tool is used to look at decisions from a number of important perspectives. This forces participants to move outside a habitual thinking style and helps achieve a more rounded view of a situation.

Many successful people think from a very rational, positive viewpoint: this is part of the reason they are successful. Often, though, they may fail to look at a problem from an emotional, intuitive, creative or negative viewpoint. This can mean that they underestimate resistance to plans, fail to make creative leaps, and do not make essential contingency plans. Similarly, pessimists may be excessively defensive; more emotional people may fail to look at decisions calmly and rationally.

If you look at a problem with the Six Thinking Hats technique, you will be able to solve it using all approaches. Your decisions and plans will mix ambition, skill in execution, public sensitivity, creativity and good contingency planning.
http://strengtheningbrandamerica.com/blog/2010/01/six-thinking-hats-looking-at-a-decision-from-all-points-of-view/

Submitted by: Anne Aubart
Six Thinking Hats was created by Edward de Bono. He published a book with the same name in 1985. “Six Thinking Hats is a simple, effective parallel thinking process that helps people be more productive, focused, and mindfully involved” (The de Bono Group, n.d.). It is used successfully in corporations worldwide and created as a decision making tool used for group discussion and individual thinking. The method is based on the idea that the human brain thinks in distinct ways that can be challenged (“Six Thinking Hats”, n.d.). Six Thinking Hats forces the group to look at things from a number of differing perspectives, including emotion and skepticism, which opens up creativity within decision making. “It forces you to move outside your habitual thinking style, and to look at things from a number of different perspectives” (Mind Tools Editorial Team, 2000).

Mind Tools Editorial Team.

Submitted by: Jackie Watters
The following website includes a timeline of important events in de Bono's life, including the many accomplishments he has been awarded with.
https://www.edwdebono.com/about
He is known as the father of "Lateral Thinking." This way of thinking gives people the opportunity to think more creatively. The example de Bono gives is from the Bible: King Solomon is approached by two women who both try to convince him that the child is her son. Instead of looking for the answer in a more logical format (linear thinking), such as asking for the father or other relatives who may have witnessed the birth, he asks for the child to be cut in half. He uses a creative way to solve the problem (lateral thinking) because he knows the real mother would rather give her child to another woman than allow it to be killed.
https://www.edwdebono.com/ideas
His ideas on Lateral Thinking lead him to the Six Thinking Hats.
