This was in part due to the fact that he was a peanut farmer from Georgia, which made him a relatable figure for many Southerners.

Mr. King is a supporter of Carter. It is support for Carter that helps readers see another side of him. His interest in Carter brings out his genuine concern for the U.S. and strong ethics: "Elections are supposed to be fair, and if they're not, then we're no better than any other country" (49). This shows Mr. King's passion and concern for the future, which Gabriel catches onto and develops his own sense of right from wrong.

Dear Frita,
I wish that I could be as brave as you. You have heart. Don't let anyone take that from you. Even though you ran off, the fact that you approached Mr. Evans is impressive. I held my breath when I read that part. I felt angry that he verbally and mentally abused you.

Everyone is vulnerable.
Gabe needs you and you need Gabe. We all need someone. I don't blame you for fearing the loss of Gabe's friendship. He is a great friend
